I have numerous books on sailing, but none describe how strong a boom preventer must/should be. The only strength-related info I've seen is that it not be stronger than the boom assembly lest the break occur at the gooseneck. I have a Beneteau Oceanis 390 with a 155% genoa. I'm thinking about attaching a trunnion snatch block to a toerail padeye near the bow, then running it back to the cockpit. Not sure how I'll attach to the boom, but it will be near the mainsheet block for stress purposes. Plus I plan to use a snubber/shock absorber near the boom. Any inputs? What size line? Block? Etc? Many thanks! Clay s/v Morning Star

Preventer

On my 390 I have 40 feet of 3/8 double-braided line and two Lewmar blocks, one with a jamb cleat. I have one carabiner on the end of each block and the carabiners snap to the both the bail on the boom and the toerail. Strong enough for me. I may rerig them this summer so I do not have to go forward to release the line before a gybe. And add another to the other side of the boat.

preventers

I saw a 38 foot cruising yacht with the following set up that I thought made sense. Boom connection was a "D" ring sewn into a nylon webbing harness.(It could have been polyester, not sure) Two 7/16" control lines led forward, one on each side of the mast, to a set of blocks attached to the foreguy padeye on the foredeck, then led back to cleats near a cockpit winch. Jibing requires nothing more than releasing one line and pulling in the other. In an emergency the preventer can be easily thrown off from the cockpit. If you use nylon or some other stretchy line you wouldn't need to buy one of those big rubber band shock absorbers. A web harness over the boom will distribute the load.

Use the...

boom vang with a snatch block attached that you can move from base of mast to either toe rail. More than simple if rigged correctly.
