When is it desirable to have the boom sheeted above the centerline of the boat?

I do this when I an really pinching upwind

and I need to have as tight a sheeting angle as possible... my experience... no science or expertise applied here...

Bob,

In light air, raising the traveler above the centerline allows a close sheeting angle without placing excessive strain on the leech.

Pullingf the traveller to windward...

allows you to center the boom and still induce twist by easing the vang and mainsheet. Setting your twist with the mainsheet, then adjusting your angle of attack with the traveller is the mindset. You may pull the boom above center but watch your indicators closely to monitor the effect. i.e. boatspeed, pointing angle and VMG(velocity made good).
