The tarp(aulin) rubbed against the aluminium boom this winter and took some paint away living some black spots. I want to paint it . I checked the "archive/forum" ,the threads were from 2001 and the recommendations were to use :
-Polyurethane enamels or
-2 parts LPU Awlgrip Imron
Which one works the best ? or maybe something else, any experience or tips.

Touch up paint

We've used Rustoleum with great success. Spray can. Made the mistake of using satin instead of glossy enamel, but not too noticeable - at least I know where I did touch up! Available at Ace Hardware for a lot less than marine store prices. Used masking tape to contain the areas. Matches perfectly with our standard white mast and boom.

I used Rustoleum in a spray can on my boom three years ago. it still looks like it did the day I painted it. I also used it on my pedestal before I installed it. It's taken a little bit of a beating, but besides the nicks from the winch handle hitting it and a full beer, it's looking good.

Poly paint

I used a polyurethane porch and deck enamel from HD on my mast and boom. Looks good, pretty easy to apply. Cost is much less than the marine paints, and so far is very durable.

I repainted my mast with Benjamine Moore DTM (direct to metal paint) and it came out great. The boatyard that pulled the stick commented on how nice it looked and they mostly see Awlgrip jobs.

The advantage of using a paint like this is that they can mix up paint for an exact match. Then any chip or ding that doesn't happen to be over a bare spot won't show. I carried my boom right into the store.

27 bucks (a little more now) and 4 hours work for a 32 foot mast. I rolled it on with a small roller and then went over it lightly with a foam brush.

Rustoleum will be ! I have a can in the basement (it sounds to easy). I use Ben Moore for my house and love it.I'll let you know in 2/3 weeks what the outcome is.

I have, in the past, written very detailed procedures on how to paint aluminum with Awlgrip, which is the preferred way, I think, but it sounds as if you wish to opt for the easy way out. If it works then cool. But, if you are in a salt water environment, to keep your paint job from bubbling down the road, there is a specific sequence of products to apply to aluminum which is explained in detail in the Awlgrip product info, or in my post some time ago.

Bill, you are right , for the boom I am looking for the easiest way .Last year I didn’t do anything on the boat ,so this year I’m punished , I have to put an antifouling coat , varnish , do the antiskid ,wax ,etc… Your past post about mast/boom painting was great, good job.
