The boom on my C30 MkII is at least 18" longer than the foot of the mainsail. Does anyone know why the boom isn't shorter? This would allow more room for a bimini or just more space in the cockpit without the boom overhead. Does the sail on a tall rig have a longer foot?

(on the right side of the page, choose "catalina 30" ... "mainsails"
check your boat against these specs...... The "E" dimension is the mainsail foot. 11.5 ft for standard rig, 12 ft for tall rig. (the tall rig has a bowsprit and a taller mast) Many boats will have a black mark at the boom's clew end to show the maximum allowable foot .... if yours does, use that mark to measure.
Anyhow....... before you start criticizing the boat designer, you need to determine if the boom is too long or the mainsail foot too short. There is a likelihood that the previous owner may have been the culprit and installed an incorrectly sized mainsail.
However, if you determine that it is the boom that is not factory correct.... whack off the mast end to the correct length and reattach the gooseneck fitting.... If the sail size is the problem..... your boat, your money, your choice.
