I want to get rid of the topping lift so can rig a canvas cover for shade and protection from the sun while anchored. I can either get a boomkicker or some form of rigid vang. Which way should I go?
There's been considerable discussion on this in the past. It seems that the prevailing opinion is that the Garhauer rigid vang is the better value...at least that's what I've surmised from the discussion. I bought the Garhauer, am happy with it and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.
On my 35.5 I have the Boomkicker and love it. I still have the topping lift for the Dutchman flaking system, but keep it slack. I tighten it up only when dropping the sail.
I installed a boomkicker on my H240 and love it. The boomkicker allowed me to remove the topping lift completely. In addition it made it easier to use the vang for trimming the sails, I always seamed to forget to loosen the topping lift.
