hey everyone, I've just acquired an Olympic Dolphin 23 and I'm wondering what height should I install the boom? how low from the sail track slot should I be?
I have a combination boom vang/boom kicker.

Fred: Unfortunately, no one seems to know anything about your boat and that includes me. The way it works on this forum, as opposed to other forums where you receive all kinds of info (most of it off the wall), we only discuss what we know to be correct. Sorry, and I wish we could help you with the info you seek.

I am assuming your gooseneck has a fitting that slides in your mast track. Why else would this question come up, unless you are building a new mast. If this is true, you need only raise the mainsail to correct height, (black band if there is one, or within a couple inches of main halyard sheave) and then pull boom down till luff wrinkles just disappear. If you have this kind of system, and I wouldn't be surprised that you do, there should be some kind of ring or attachment at bottom of gooseneck to attach a boom downhaul line. This line / fitting also serves as a cunningham for adjusting sail shape (draft position) through luff tension.

After checking a little, your mainsail luff should measure 21'5" so a gooseneck 22' below main halyard sheave should suffice. Better measure sail first as it "might" have stretched in 40 years.

Ive not sailed your boat type; but, many of such boats from this era had their mainsail halyard setup quite different from todays 'typical'. If the halyard is or was wire spliced to a 'rope'; and, the wire had a little ball or several balls swaged directly to the wire portion, and the mast had either something that looked like a 'claw' attached to it or had a funny looking metal 'jam cleat' attached to the mast.
..... here's how to raise and set up the mainsail. Wire halyards are quite passe and have been replaced with small diameter super-strong hi-tech, small diameter polymer lines. If your wire halyard is no more, you'll have to improvise the following:

Raise the gooseneck on its slide ALL the WAY as far as it can go.
• Raise the mainsail on its wire halyard as far as it will go up the mast.
• Insert the ball on the wire halyard into its 'claw', make a cleat hitch onto the mast mounted cleat near the bottom of the mast with the rope portion of the halyard. The ball on the wire halyard takes ALL the strain of the halyard.
• Open the pin-stop on the gooseneck and bring the gooseneck down until the boom position is 'just' supported by the halyard tension (no tension in the mainsail luff).
••• Then .... (important) Stretch out the luff of the mainsail, by bringing the gooseneck DOWN another 2.0 inches.
Thats the 'basic setting' for the gooseneck height for sailing in 12-15 kts.

You may find a black band or the remnants of a black band around the margin of the mast near or slightly lower than this 'final' position of the gooseneck slide. In HIGH winds the gooseneck is positioned so that the TOP of the boom is equal to the top of the black band.

After checking a little, your mainsail luff should measure 9'9" so a gooseneck 10' below main halyard sheave should suffice. Better measure sail first as it "might" have stretched in 40 years.
Uh, are you sure about that? The "E" spec is the boom/foot length not the luff. The "P" is the mainsail luff, or hoist, which is noted as 21.42 ft.

Joe,

Of course! - I have no idea where that came from. Would have been a tiny little boat, wouldn't it? I did correct the post.

thanks everyone, I was wondering what that little ring on the gooseneck was for, now I'll be able to correctly adjust the boom height as needed :)

Fred1 how about some pics of your gooseneck set up; and, if you have something that looks like a 'claw' on your mast a pic of that also. ;-)
