Boom clevis pin

So, I came out to the boat after several weeks of weather, and found the clevis pin to the boom AND the retaining ring laying on the deck.

Anyone ever had this happen, or able to guess what might have caused it? It should not have come out with the retaining ring in the pin. We put the boom back up and put the pin back in, but I can't help but wonder how it happened and when it will happen again.

Well, I have not had this happen, but it certainly could. It sounds like maybe the ring is not doing its job well. Replace it, and make sure it is secure. Sometimes those rings get curled up from being removed a few times. They can slip off. I personally abhor those little, fingernail splitting rings! Unfortunately, they are good for the job they do.

Could it be someone was on your boat, removing that boom? Weird, but weirder things have happened.
