Boom Brake vs. Vang

Our boat survived the local flooding. The lake where we are moored was 12' higher than normal. The devastation in areas close to here was record setting and unprecedented. Please keep these people in your prayers and thoughts.

I am thinking of adding a boom brake in lieu of the vang. When the mast step was replaced at the beginning of this season the centered attachment point for the vang went away. The vang is in so-so condition and on my replacement list this winter. I am considering a dutchman type brake instead. Is there any reason why this is a bad idea? I need to rerig the vang anyway the brake would probably not mean much more work or money.
