Boom Bail

I have a 1983 H27 SL Cherubini. I would like to add a boom bail to be able to install a boom-vang. The boom has three bails for the mainsheet purchase mechanism. These are bolted through the boom but the bolts seem to run inside sleeves which are attached to the boom. The boom also carries in its interior a single line for reefing and the outhaul line. My question is can I drill through the boom without significantly weakening it, (there would be no sleeve to run the bolt) and should there be any consideration about the lines running inside? I would like to hear from someone who has done this or from anyone who may suggest an alternative method of attaching the bail.

Alternate attachments

On my previous boat(1980 H30)we had a strap device to attach the vang to the boom. It had two metal plates that were shaped to fit into the boom sail track on each side and a strap that hung down to provide an attachment point for the vang. It worked rather well but I don't know the manufacturer or where to get one. The marine catalogs also have a number of metal fittings that are bolted or riveted to the bottom of the boom to support a vang.

sure you can

Sure you can put a blot thru to install a bail. this is strong. and will rotate a bit if you change angle or use it as a fair weather preventer. you just have to be careful not to hit the gear inside and make sure the location you pick does not interfear with blocks inside the boom. measure up from the deck to get the distance out from the mast so you have equal angles and it will work best. Easy project and should work fine.

oh sorry i forgot the sleeves.

the sleeve is to keep you from compressing the boom. you can acomplish that by using a bolt with limited tread inside the boom then you would not have abrasion from the threads on the lines.

Drilled through ours

We drilled through ours and mounted a bail with a through bolt for our vang. There is no broblem wth strength on this spar. I do think we were neglected the possibility we might damage some of the rigging inside the boom. David Lady Lillie

Thanks to everybody.

I thought all the answers were right on the mark. The answer I wanted to hear was that the boom was strong enough to support the pull on a through bolt. I had thought about self tapping screws, some sort of a strap around the boom but I'll go with the simplest which is to drill and use a bolt. I'll admit I had not given any thought to having equal 45 degree angles coming from the base of the mast and the boom bail and I'm still thinking this one out to figure out the advantage. Thanks to all. Benny
