In some photos of sailboats I notice that the boom for the mainsail is relatively parallel with the deck and perpendicular to the mast. My boom, I noticed, with the sail out cants down toward the stern of my H23. Is this indicitive of the sails stretching? If so does this mean I should replace it? Or....is it normal for this boat? Any help of feedback would be appreciated. Stsort@ Aol.com

That is normal.

I had a 1985 h23 for ten years and the boom was always like that. I guess that allowed a little more square footage. That sure was a good boat! Kinda miss it. Tim Witt....C25/1990/wing/tall/5978....Smith Mtn. Lake, VA

Thanks Tim You must have purchased your 23 relatively new. We just got our H23 this past spring. We absolutely love her!!!! Incidentally...ours is a 1985 also.

new sail

My 23 has a brand new mainsail and the boom still hangs down. There are 2 other 23's in our club and I'm afraid it is normal for the boom to hang down. I would like to see more headroom and considered raising the boom about 6 inches since the top of the main stops about 8inchs from the top of the mast, but I havn't heard from anyone that has done it and it would make the boat a little more tender. Just duck!

I hear differently

Not to disagree with everyone , but I have a 1986 H 23 and I have communicated a great deal with other owners through email. I have been told by one owner that the original UK sails tend to stretch quit a bit and that they replaced all there's with new sails and that it not only raised the boom but improved the performanceas well. I know this is conflicting information but I am a bit confused myself. I'd like to install a bimini, but the boom angle limits me. Sigh..

recut the main

The boom is supported by the main while sailing. If you want it higher have your sailmaker recut the foot of the sail to accomodate your needs.

1985 Stock sails, Neil Pryde

I bought my h23, 1985 new. The stock sails were Neil Pryde. The boom was at an angle from the day the sails were unfolded. That just the way they were designed. I suppose there was a small amount of square footage to be gained or it was a balance thing but it was intentional anyway. I had twelve years good service from my h23.............. thanks Dave. If I were outfitting new sails, I would go with 135 roller furling (CDI) and a main with two reef points and cut the foot to make the boom level for head clearance. For Steve

Yes Steve, bought it "bran spankin new" from Dave Condon when he first went into business selling sailboats. I kept her twelve years before selling. I have a Catalina 25 now but wish I had that wonderful Kenyon boom from the h23 installed on my C25. My h23 had the white Kenyon mast and boom which was changed to a tapered type mast a year or so after 1985. Tim Witt C25/1990/wing/tall/5978. Smith Mtn. Lake, VA
