I have in-mast furling, and a fixed length mast topping lift. The boom is not level, the height is several inches higher at the end of the boom. Is this normal?

I have a H36...same thing..normal.

..and you should not be having any problems with rolling the sail. If you try to get the boom level you will not get the sail out very well. That is also why people rec to ease the main sheet when letting the sail out...the boom will raise even more and the sail will come out easier. abe

If....

...the topping lift is not adjustable and it raises the boom to allow easier unfurling of the sail, how on earth do you get proper main sheet tension to control sail shape?

Use the outhaul to flatten the foot,

use the vang to control belly. Adjust the traveler to help with head twist and weather helm. Roll it back into the boom to reef. Steve

Boom and mast topping lift

Bill, your boat sounds pretty new. If you have a rigid vang, I would submit to you that you dont need your topping lift because your vang holds up your boom. We keep ours shackled to the mast as an emergency main halyard... We dont have in mast though. Heck you could use it for sneaking your bosun chair up the mast. Cheers Rick

You missed that it's "fixed". An adjustable topping lift can be a life saver though.

Topping lift

Franklin, good point. But still, I would think removing it from the rigging would be the way to go. The sail can be shaped then. Cheers Rick
