Bona fide holes in my hull!

I have been a trailer-sailer since 1976 sailing a 16' catamaran. So I was surprized when I bought a day/weekend cruiser Hunter 25' and discovered so many holes in the hull. Holes for waste water/exhaust/drainage etc. Another surprize was the flimsy vacuum cleaner like hoses that attach to these holes. Our catamaran had two drainage holes for each hull and were tightly secured by drainage plugs. Has anyone had problems with these seemingly fragile holes? I'm probably being prudish about it but I'm still learning. Any expertise info. in this is appreciated. Thanks, Mark

Replace those hoses!

Use only hose rated for each application--sanitation hose for the head and holding tank, exhaust hose for engine exhaust, etc. It's especially important that any hose connected to a below-waterline thru-hull be rated for below-waterline use. You might also want to read my "A lot of things to do in the spring" reply to Mark--also in the "ask all sailors" forum if you haven't figured out yet that it's a LOT easier and faster to scroll through the last 24 hours than it is to check individual forums.
