I've just purchased a 1994 Hunter 29.5 (traded in my much-loved H-27). The boat is equiped with Bomar Low Profile hatches. One of the hatches' Lexan Lense is cracked. I've considered just having a local plastics warehouser cut me a new piece of Lexan and fitting it to the hatch, however, was wondering if there are replacement lenses available from Pompanette or some other distributor. The Pompanette website is of no use. I've checked the archives to no avail. I'd rather not replace the whole hatch unit, but, what the hell...it will probably come to that. Would greatly appreciate any comments or recomendations

Go local!

Tim: I believe that you want to acrylic & not lexan (could be wrong here). If you go to Pompanette, they are going to charge you $75-80 + materials. Just remove the lense and go to a local plastic shop. Have them cut the lense and get the goop from Hunter (GE 101?) to re-seal it. You should be able to do the job for less than $40-50.

Steve, you are right

You want to use acrylic not lexan. This is according to what Mark Plastics uses.

Thanks Steve and Ron...

You are both right...acrylic tends to be a lot stronger than polycarbonate(Lexan)...thanks for the input...Steve, you should think about having a forum of your own...I've read your suggestions on all of the other forums and they've been very helpful indeed...thanks again...tm

Tempered glass?

I replaced the lenses in both my topside hatches with 1/4" tinted tempered safety plate glass. It's used frequently on larger boats and the weight helps hold the hatch closed. I used 3M Marine Silicone to seal it. That was 5 years ago and it works great. I've bounced a few things off them since and they take a lickin' and keep on keeping on. Made patterns myself and got the glass at the local glass store. Total cost for the glass and the goop was under $100.

Tim: I'm just here to remember what you guys forgot or missed. I'm always glad to help a fellow sailor.

Bomar Hatches

Last year I replaced the lense in the forward hatch. I opted to buy the lense from Pompanette. It was an exact fit, beveled and drilled for the hatch risers. It was worth the $75. Also ordered the silicone glue from them. The hatch does not leak and looks original.

Another Thought

I recently needed to repair a faulty hatch but had no info to identify the manufacturer. I called Mike Thomas (Parts Dept at Hunter factory) who quickly identified it as a Bomar hatch and gave me the Bomar part number. I called Bomar (603-826-5791) and had the part within a week. So, Mike should be able to give you the Bomar lens part number if you want to go that route.
