Bolt at bottom of compression post

After stepping my mast this spring and resetting all the standing rigging, I noticed the bolt at the base of the compression post at the cabin sole has broken. The end that holds the nut has been severed and the broken bolt is stuck in the hole with a downward slant to it. It is too small a bolt to have supported the weight of the mast, so I am wondering what the purpose of that bolt was? Is it just to keep the post from twisting? If anyone has any ideas, I would apprciate sonme advice. Brian Hannas/v The Journey

Brian, I can't give you any factual answer, but

if it is a smaller size boat (less than 3/8" threaded portion diameter) it could very possibly be a plate locating bolt. This type of bolt would secure the plate for other operations.My 95 H26 has a 3/4" SS bolt at the bottom of the compression post that holds the hanging bracket for the centerboard. Thus in my case that bolt would be of very critical importance.Good luck on your journey of discovery. You might try calling Hunter Marine, they are usually very helpful.RayS/V Speedy
