My 3 phase charger for some reason overcharged my deep cycle golf cart batteries to the point they started to boil. Fortuntely only about an inch of water needed to be added to bring them back up to depth. Are these batteries ruined now that they have boiled?. Also my charger burnt out the protection fuse but boiled the batteries after I replaced the fuse with a lower amp fuse than the one that burnt out. Any advise would be appreciated. Barrie

Hydrometer

If the tops of the plates were exposed the batteries are probably toast, or soon will be. If the tops of the plates were not uncovered, you may be all right. Get a hydrometer from an auto supply. Costs a couple of bucks. You can then check each cell and know exactly what is happening in there. As for the charger, sorry, someone else will have to give you some help on that.

Exposed portions of the plates are dead

The rest of the plates are still ok. So, you should start saving your money for new batteries. As for the charger, how old is it? you can have it tested.

Boiling batteries is part of the maintenance that

golf-carts need. A good 3-stage charger has this setting available. It is turned on by you after checking your cells with a hydrometer and finding a specific gravity variation. That variation is then eliminated by a high charge rate that boils the electrolyte. But you must have the plates covered adequately. And be sure to check the SG before adding water or the reading is useless. What else??? Oh hell, read your manual. You can't do anything until you understand the requirements of your system.
