After reading and thinking about the story,

I tried to put it into how I feel about my boat. I think the writer took license to exagerate his love with the boat. I love the water, the freedom, the challenge, the solidairity, the wind, the smells, the all of it. The boat is just a way to get there. I treat her good and I am happy with her performance, but it is the all of it that focuses into something that is indiscribable. just thoughts... r.w.landau

Seems we share more then blood

I just found out 3 weeks ago that I am related to Humphrey. I always knew sailing was in my blood somehow. One day out of the blue when I was 16 I decided I wanted a sailboat so I bought a small 21' draw keel in Jax, Fl. I had never even been on a boat before but something drew me to it. The previous owner took me for a half hour sail to show me the basics and that was it. From that point on I've been in love with sailboats. Life dragged me away but I found my way back. I guess now I will be looking at Humphrey in a new light. Interesting.

RW: Yes, the boat is still around

My daughter's has a good friend from college and that friend's parents have restored Santana to pristine condition. The boat sank and they raised it and restored it over a several year period. (They own a large boatyard in the Bay area.) My daughter's been on the boat several times and says it's simply incredible. I have a wonderful photo of my daughter at the helm of Santana as she sailed under the Golden Gate Bridge. (My daughter is 24 and is a good sailor.) In fact, the very same weekend she was sailing Bogie's former boat under the Golden Gate Bridge... I was putting the pink antifreeze into the engine and winterizing our O'Day 302 in Kansas. (There's something inherently wrong with that disparity of experiences!) I hope to sail on the boat sometime. I have an invitation to do so, but haven't been to the Bay Area recently. FYI.

Steve, Like franklin said....

It is in the blood.... Sounds like she has more sailing than you do! r.w.landau

Check Latitude or KKMI and this link

Santana is indeed alive and well, showing up on the bay frequently. The link is to the KKMI boatyard's description of what's been done to her over the years. Or, check the archive at Latitude 38.

What a story!

Here's looking at you, kid! Bogey remains one of the great man's men of the movies. It is easy to see how he fell in love with the beautiful lines of this Stephens boat.

Santana story ...

There is a story about Bogey, Santana and how he loved the boat that I heard years ago. Seems that Bogey had someone taking care of the boat while he was away. One of the jobs that needed doing was varnishing a table. After becoming frustrated with dust marring the final coats of varnish, the worker decided to hang the table upside down and finish it while lying on his back naked (so as not to risk any dust from his clothing marring the finish). As he was applying the last coat, Bogey returned to the boat. When he saw the man lying naked on the cabin sole, he took off his clothes too, lay next to him, complimented him for the extra effort and gave him a raise ... or so the story goes. She is indeed a wonderful boat, and lucky to be well loved for most of her life. Randy

Rick, just a clarification....

The "Wanderer" in Captain Rob was supposedly owned by Clark Cable, not Bogart. :)
