Joe, No, I am saying that I have a serious issue with their Trailering division and I made the above adjustment to my title. I did paint too wide a swath with my angry brush.

However, the misunderstanding seemed to come from some of the members of this forum who spoke about insurance. BoatUS does sell insurance, but their Towing on land and water is not insurance. That is the misunderstanding. I don't have an issue with the water towing part of the company. I just feel that I was let down very hard at a terrible time by a Company who had promised to help and did not.
Heh, heh........ Been there, done that...... but it still leaves and empty pit in your stomach when you buy something and find out it's not what you thought. Let it go, my friend, and go sailing...... soon.

[Not to high jack this thread but its related to BoatUS and how they handle claims]

I recently purchased a boat and had it insured through BoatUS. It was accepted on condition of seeing the survey results. A couple weeks after they accepted they sent me a form asking about what things I fixed on boat that was recommended from survey. Most all of the items were fixed but I was curious if this was some type of way to try and deny a claim if something happens even mildly related to something on the survey recommendations.

Im more worried now after reading this thread that they might try to be snakes about it.

Normal for all reputable marine insurance companies. If it is an A list item (Must be repaired), and you choose to not repair or tell them it is repaired and was not ..then yes they may have recourse to deny...Some carriers will stipulate ALL repairs must be made for the insurance to "bound" or put in force. Call your company and ASK...about any concerns.

When I purchased this boat, A list item - no propane solenoid and auto shutoff...I have CNG and asked the underwriter to document ANY CNG issue with a sailboat...I did not have to install propane safety gear on my CNG equipped boat.

Boat US Insurance is not one of the companies that you have to worry about. Progressive maybe, and some of the other gimmick companies..

We had a wheel bearing go out while towing our C22. Boat US sent a truck. They would not pay for them to repair the wheel bearing but they did put the trailer with the boat on it on the truck and towed it 60 miles to our house. No charge. Getting the trailer add on was the best $14 I have spent.

Tom, The newer model Chev 2500's with the 6 speed transmission will pull just about anything you can legelly hang on the back of it. The 3/4 ton Ford's and Dodge's also will do the same. Dodge builds the best deisel overall. The one ton trucks and any dually will simply beat you to death so unless you are towing the Queen Mary I'd skip these. These are the trucks we farm and haul things with for a living so I feel confident with these recommendations.
Sorry about BoatsUS in your case. They have ben very good with us for over a decade.

Got a truck today.

A 2001 Ford F-250 4X4. Has all kinds of after market power assists and fuel savings chip, frankly a lot of stuff, that I don't have a clue about. It does have all the power and get up and go that I could want. A kid right out of College and his Dad have been building it to pull competitions, problem is the kid now has a kid of his own on the way and a house to buy and a Mommy Wagon to buy for the new wife and baby. So bye bye truck.

I am sure it will do all we need and then some.

Up Date on BoatUS.

They are going to pay for the $60 tow. It is something at least. I wish they would have just towed the darn boat another 35 miles to the lake. Oh' well.

In the cosmic scope of things, it was only bent metal not torn skin and money and time have solved the essential issues.

Regards,

Tom...

I got an insurance quote from boatUS and it was half the cost of Progressive. I'm a newbie when it comes to boat insurance and wonder if the low price = low service???

I think that you will have a lot better luck filing a claim on a boat with BoatUS than ANY automobile insurance company. Anything other than sinking is considered normal wear and tear or a pre-existing condition with the auto insurance co's.

Chapter 2: Well, I talked to BoatUS again today and now they are seeming to re evaluate their first position. Won't know for sure until Monday.

Nest issue:

What kinds of trucks do you guys and gals buy to pull your boat? The truck that I just totaled was a 1999 Suburban 2500 with heavy duty towing package.

I am thinking of looking for something more substantial, like a F-350 w/ duallies on it. The problem seems to be that because my boat is so heavy (5600+trailer) my Suburban seemed to work awfully hard getting us up rolling hills here in Eastern Iowa.

Please let me know your thought and possible recommendations and for what reasons.

Thanks,

Tom...
After owning a Chevy Silverado for 13 yrs I switched over to a F-150 last yr. I haven't owned it long enough to say if it is much better. But, these newer trucks have a lot more HP. '97 Chevy-250 HP, '08 F-150 330 HP. I think that the F-150 is rated to tow around 7000lbs. You probably don't need a F-250/350. I barely feel the boat (22') behind the F-150.

Regarding Progressive...before using them check out (Google or Bing) their chairman of the board Peter Lewis. I have Progressive at this time, but come renewal, they are gone.

I'm with you on that one 100%. They wouldn't get my business either.
