Just got a quote of about $450 to insure our 1980 O'Day 30, book value of about $20K. Have been paying about $200 more than that this past year through a private broker based upon an evaluation of $17K. Any comments either way regarding BoatUS Insurance rates and quality of coverage? And, any sense as to what is the right range of rates to be paying? Thanks all... Fair Winds, Jim

Insurance

You might check on that quote. Looking at my Boat/U.S. policy, I pay $156. 1976 Catalina 30 with $600 deductible. I had a major claim 2 years ago and the service was outstanding. I just called the 800 number and every thing was taken care of. Liability is $300K, Medical is $1K. Hope this helps

Just switched!

Jim: We just switched from Allstate to Boats US. The primary reason we went shopping was basically that Allstate insurance sucks. Probably OK if you sink your boat, but nothing else. We were paying about $325/yr for a 1985 H'31. BoatUS covered us for $250 with an agreed value of $35,000. Only heard good things so that is why we decided on BoatUS.

Allstate

h34 on Lake Champlain valued at 30k with 300k liability cost me $161. Was over $190 until I told them I completed the US Power squad course. BoatUS was unable to match their price. Claims and service have been good. Back when I got them in 1994 they did not require a survey when others did. Barry

Happy BOATUS customer

I use boat US for the insurance on my 1985 Catalina 36 and am very happy with the service I have received. They are less than half what I was quoted by a local broker. I think that like car insurance, boat premiums are based on some formula computed by actuarial data on your local area. I am paying about $500.00 per year in premiums, yet a friend with a similar boat in another area is paying about $100.00 more per year with Boat US. BTW, they actually seem to be helping out on several issues that concern boaters. They have a strong lobbying group working on our issues.

Happy with Boat?US also

I have been with them for 5 years now. I have also had 2 large claims with them (both lightning strikes). The were very, very fast to settle and cost was never an issue, even when I tried to save them $1000.00. You will be happy with them... Steve, s/v The Odyssey (H310)

Allstate

Allstate had the cheapest quote, $548.00 on my 1990 Vision 32 estimated value of $50,000. Had a minor claim of $5,000 on a grounding (new drive shaft, new rudder) and Allstate was wonderful. I paid my $500 deductible and my marina and Allstate handled the problem.

West Marine?

Anyone have any West Marine experiences? I just got a quote from them about $100.00 cheaper than BoatUS.

compare apples to apples

When buying insurance be sure to ask if the policy is either ACV or stated value. It makes a lot of difference if your boat is totaled. Actual Cash Value is like car insurance, that is they take a depriciated value of your vessel . Stated value remains constant. BoatUS and West Marine act as discount brokers for Several different Marine insurers. Ask lots of what if questions. Like am I covered under the Jones Act. What is my pollution coverage. Will you pay for salvage efforts

Regarding Boat US Insurance

We purchased Boat US Insurance for the fisr time last year after buying our sailboat. Only two weeks after the policy took effect we got caught in a bad storm and the roller furling failed. All I could do was remove the sail and I was letting it go into the water to avoid getting blown overboard. Well my partner, who was at the helm, had the engine in gear and the sheets got wrapped around the shaft and we were dead in the water with our foresail dragging in the water. We had to be towed in, very expensive in rough weather, and the boat suffered over $4,500 in damage. Boat US insurance was very helpful and gave us no problem about covering the costs. We also have the added towing insurance on our membership. So far so good!!
