Hasn't felt right to loan her out...

1976 27' "Siesta" has never been loaned out. Even though at her mature age of 26 years she's in VERY good condition, it hasn't seemed like a good idea. Frankly, I just don't trust people enough, I suppose. AND, the Channel Islands are beautiful and magical, but the weather can be a bit fickle. I've had more than one time when the day started out perfectly and a fog or rain came over very quickly. We've had occasional troubles with the Atomic bomb onboard, too, and so wouldn't want anyone else to have to deal with that! I have taken her out alone, and so has my husband. No relatives, though. My 18 yr niece did so 1ce without my prior knowledge and left it unkempt (i.e., didn't know how to pump the head, ew!). tsk tsk! BTW, a suggestion related to this subject: have #'s of neighbors, either on-dock on on-land to keep a watchful eye. I've done this and it has diverted trouble on several occasions. Makes for good feeling of community, too! I also have a key at the dockmaster's office for emergency use, and he has a list of reg vendors (rigger, boat cleaner, mechanic etc.) who have permission to board the boat without my presence.

Just me so far

Only if I gained enough confidence in the other person. That would have to be obtained by sailing, docking and maintenance experience first.

Once but never again

Did it once let a close friend who had sailed with me several times. I was a nervious reck the whole time the boat was gone. I said never never never again.

My son, and it was tough

Until this Summer, my '83 H34 never went out without me at the helm. My son (23 years old) asked if he could take it out for a weekend with friends. He is conscientious, a very capable sailor (probably better than I), and I knew he could handle the boat on his own. But, it was still tough deciding if both of us were ready for this! In the end, I gave him to go-ahead, and it was an important transition for us: I'm now ready for him to use the boat on his own, and he has "moved up a notch" in his boating expertise. By the way: he only ended up taking it out for a day, and did fine! Ramsay Selden

Dropping Off

I help teach sailing to Women at Pelican, and I try to let them take the boat by themselves. Usually, I sail with them for two or three times, and when they have gotten into the groove the third time or so, I just step off the transom into the commitee boat. Sometimes they don't even know I am not there until they see me in the boat standing off their course. Then, they know they are on thir own. It is a lovely way for them to gain confidence, and it is a thrill for them. I get aboard to coach them in docking, or to just be there, but by that time, they know they have been sailing alone.

Boat Sitter

I (a female) have armchair sailed with one of my best friends (a male) for over 4 years now, and I recently took a couple of ASA certified sailing lessons. Just before my friend was deployed with the US Coast Guard out of the states for 6 months, he bought a 25 foot Santana and asked me to boat sit for him. I was delighted and terrified at the same time at the thought of handling a sailboat by myself. However, he reassured me by saying that I am confident enough to sail it and paranoid enough to be safe! Of course I would never let anyone else take the boat out without his permission, and also agreed that no work involving drilling be done to the boat without his permission. The experience of being the sole Skipper and maintaining a sailboat is absolutely priceless, and I am very grateful to the trust of my friend. He will benefit by having a maintained sailboat waiting for him when he returns from service.

Insurance

I can't imagine anyone asking to borrow my boat. Maybe if they loaned me their wife, and she better be in bristol condition. My insurance does not cover my liability if I am not present.

First time

We've loved and nurtured her for 12 years but now it's time to turn her over to a younger owner. We did arrange to share her for the rest of the season though but after the new master took her out the first time, things weren't left quite like we'd like to have them. It's sad to say goodbye but my husband is 87 now and doesn't get around the cockpit like he used to. I'm 75 and it's harder for me to hoist sales and handle the jib from the bow. Good memories though.

Not no, but H.... NO

You must want to ruin a perfectly good marriage, friendship, relationshiop, etc. Well, it (my '94 Legend 37.5) did go out once with only my son (18) and his girlfriend. I was only a mile or two away at most on a jet ski. We swapped jet ski and boat out in the middle of the bay. There was little or no wind. You could conceivably grow to let your children use it, but even that is risky business... Steve Zito

Reciprocity rule

My friends Don, Michael, and Dan can borrow her any time they want. Of course, they have a 38 Nantucket in Newport Beach, a 38 Morris in Rock Hall, and a 50 Hinkley In New Smyrna Beach, so the reciprocity rule is in effect!!!

No way!

When my boat goes out...I generally go out with it... I do share the boat with a friend..he has it one week...I have it the next...but we generally invite the other out along with our guests...it goes out anywhere from 3-6 times a week...

After all of the "NO's", here is a yes!

I had been trailering the Catalina 22 and it is impossible to launch and recover alone. My neighbor struck a deal that he did a massive cleanup on the boat, and he and I split the $1,000 wet slip fee. He is a pretty savvy boat guy and I feel perfectly safe with him using the boat. It is the difference in it sitting on the trailer week after week because of me not having any help compared to it being used and VERY available to me. My neighbor prefers to sail at night and I am retired so I like sailing in the mornings. The situation is working well for us.

Only my wife

My wife Judy is a much more competent sailor then me. She will take the boat out with friends. BUT ONLY WITH A COMPETENT FIRST MATE! She taught her sister to sail and also made her get her Connecticut safe boating certificate. She became my wifes first mate when I am not crewing with her.I on the other hand would not think about taking the boat out without my wife. She is truely the captain. I crew and navigate.

no one else takes her out without me...

It's not that I don't trust anyone else with her, it's just that there is no reason for ME not to go! There has never been a time when a close friend or relative wanted to go out sailing and I was not willing to go as well. It would be very unusual (i'd have to be hospitalized) for me not to want to take people out sailing!

My Brother

I went to the Dry Tortugas in July and loaned my boat to my brother for the time I was away. We went out together the week before to make sure he was comfortable with the boat. (He has experience with the boats that my Dad owned.) If he would have been uncomfortable....I WOULD HAVE BEEN ALSO! Things went well. I loaned him the boat. His girlfriend went with him. They were pulling into the dock and the girlfriend slipped and he got nervious and run into the seawall and nicked the nose of "EXHIBIT "A"". He was beside himself worried that I was going to be angry. When I got home he told me what had happened. I gave him the boat the next weekend also. I would rather have a brother that sails, than a perfect boat. I had fewer reservations loaning it out the second time. I don't think he would make the same mistake twice. Besides, why should I be the only one that dings my boat. My insurance covers my brothers and father to use my boat, also. r.w.landau
