OK, we've all heard how high the prices are at West Marine, and we know Fred does not like Wal*Mart, Chinese made zincs or our Dubya;), and we know that WM is convenient but expensive. My question is this. What have you found that IS an EXCEPTIONAL value for use on your boat? I'll start (Fred ignore this item)! I just came from Sam's Club (owned by the evil Wal*Mart);) and purchased some new microfiber rags. Many of you have heard me extolling the virtues of microfiber for years and this is about the best deal I've seen yet. As a point of reference I used to pay about $4.00 per rag when they first came out and even at that price found they were worth it. The microfiber rags from Sam's are 16" X 16" and are of a surprisingly high quality for a multi-pack. A 25 pack of these microfibers cost me just $9.88 or .39 cents per rag. Of course I bought two... Microfibers make great tack rags, dusting rags, drying rags, dodger glass cleaning rags, compounding/polishing/waxing rags, stainless steel cleaning rags (with denatured alcohol), glass cleaning rags on and on & on... They make terry cloth rags about as outdated as riding your dinosaur to work and they are in the league of Rain-X, The Absorber (synthetic chamois), Mr. Clean Magic Eraser and a hand full of other products that actually work as advertised. So what have you found that goes above and beyond in a boating value?

Maine, excellent thread!

I am not able to think of any worthwhile product(s) since you mentioned all of my favorites like 'Magic Eraser'. But I will certainly try the microfiber rags. Can't wait to see what others have found. One of my biggest expenses is for 'boat soap'. Surely there are better products for scrubbing the decks than what we find at WM. Which reminds me of one product NOT from WM, a really good mop head. It is the kind with several strands of a chamois-like material. I love it for doing the decks because it absorbs so much of that morning dew. Maybe from Lowes?

Just a note.

Just a note of caution about Bon Ami it contains calcite & feldspar mineral abrasives so use it very carefully. It's about as abrasive as 1000-1200 grit paper.. While Bon Ami is great stuff when used appropriately it is quite abrasive and should NEVER be used on or near an Awlgrip finish or shiny polished gelcoat if you want it to remain shiny.....

Better products than West Marine?

I don't know which West Marine you shop at; but I have never seen a better variety of boat cleaning products than I have at West Marine. The prices may be high, but if you hold out for the sales you can get an OK deal on good products. You will not find many of the products you need to care for your boat at Wal-Mart. Best Regards, Tom H.

Get your Citrus

An amazing product I came across several years ago is 3M Citrus Cleaner. Comes in a pump can. Great cleaner and the very best for getting off old tape residue. Even smells nice. But also be prepared. It will attract every bee inside the horizon.

WM=West Marine & Wal Mart

Am I the only one who has noticed both stores have the same initials? I've seen lots of "WM"s in forums.... which store does it refer to? Or is it "Wally's Marketplace".

I guess...

I guess if it was Wally World people would not be bitching about the price and if it's West Marine they would...;);)

Maine Sail's Cleaning Supplies

I don't care where you get your stuff, but just about everything on your list is available at West Marine. The prices may be higher so I guess you shop where you get the best deal. Thanks for the picture of your cleaning supplies! ;D T

Dollar Stoe Boating

Isn't there a book published about boating supplies & stuff made or used from the dollar store? I think the name was something like "Dollar Store Baoting". That's like WalMart Marine? Went looking for 3M4200 at Lowe's a while back. They didn't have it, & I thought I would have to order from West or Defender. Lo and Behold it was in the sporting goods section of Wallyworld (Wal Mart), right along side those cheap fenders and light weight dock lines (that I would use for the dinghy!)
