Red

I kind of like red wines like a cabernet because you can drink them without refrigeration or ice. seems like a good option if you are electricity deprived when out on the hook. not sure if it is available everywhere but I've been a fan recently of the bare foot brand, pretty good wine for very low cost.
I like the response about brew your own, sounds good. do you actually buy grapes and squish them or some kind of extract? I tried to brew beer once and it was a disaster.

OK......I'lll play. I purchased a 1987 Hunter last November, which was named "Zinful" by the original owner. I could not have picked a more unique name. It's name has been acknowledged and awared with a bottle of wine at my local mid-week SF bay racing club on 2 recent occasions. I always stock a couple bottles of old vin zins in the boat's wine rack for my guests.

I only drink wine at anchor and usually with a meal. A Chilean Cabernet is my preference like Santa Rita Reserve. Underway I prefer beer or a weak rum and water (grog). I don't sail intoxicated either.

you might like a chilled liebfraumilch. not too good with meals, but before or after. good with a cheese plate... mixed up flavors. don't think you'll find blue nun or worms un rhine any more. went thru hurricane ginger there back in the 70's. still carry the scar from surfing her swell's too close to the swimming area at atlantic beach. beautifull area. jimbob

The old geezer like to retire to captains quarters for a fine old Port, with a round for the crew and neighbors occasionally. For those who prefer a white, try a Madeira, the favorite of an old surveyor named George Washington. Sparingly, of course...

personal choice or legal requirement

as for why no alcohol regardless of volume while underway I had a 50 ton Masters license with towing and sailing endorsements. Probably not a good idea as a licensed captain to be partaking of alcohol while operating the vessel. In event of any incident it would be pretty clear how the courts and public opinion would look at it.

My vote is for a pinot noir, either from Oregon or California. And Magic Eraser will remove wine stains from the gelcoat.

Beer Can races: our boat does not drink during racing, others do. We still can't beat them all!

Casual sailing: listening to a day of calls on channel 16 underscores my belief that most emergencies are a result of distraction and poor choices. I need all the braincells I have to keep me on the listening side of the radio.

I am very concerned about the drinking speedboater coming at me; the sailboater with a beer in his hand, not so much!

I can drink without getting drunk. Nothing is better than an ice cold corona on a hot day with a light breeze.
My other drink of choice....bombay saphire, tonic and lime. :)

I have a preference for stout, as it is much more palatable at bilge temperature. Either Guinness Extra Stout or Black Toad. No more than one or two over the course of a day.

It just seems like part of sailing, like flying the chute; I don't need either, but it completes the expereince.
