William, Not quite sure why you want to haul your boat in a foreign country. Do you expect the craftsmenship to be superior? Are you trying to save a buck. My thoughts are this. 1. If you haul out in Mexico what kind of recourse do you have if something is not done correctly? 2. You say you want to "over Haul", do you mean a complete refit of the boat or are you wanting to rebuild the motor? 3. Do to US embargo of Cuba you cannot go there, so that leaves Mexico i guess. 4. If it were me, and I've done, I would want my boat close at hand so I can check on the work being done or be in a position to c omplete as much of the work myself. You may want to rethink your choises and take a look around your area to find a yard that may be more suitable to handle the task you need done, or allow you to do some or all of the work yourself. Good luck in determining what the best way maybe for you.

You get caught doing business with Cuba, not only will the Coast Guard confiscate your boat, you'll wind up spending a whole lot of money trying to defend yourself in Federal Court after your arrest. You probably will never get your boat back. The savings can't be enough to take a chance like that. Your call!

If you going to Cuba, come to Venezuela
If you are thinking of Cuba, be safe and come down to Venezuela. The work done here at some of the yards is as good as I have seen in the US and the price will knock your socks off. We had our 38' catamaran hauled and a bottom scrapped, wet sanded, and painted for $650 US. We couldn't even get hauled in the US for that price. Many boats down here are getting major work done that would require you to get a mortgage in the US and the cost is so low as to be unbelievable. Oriente Canavas is completing our enclosure, Dinghy cover, and a sunshade out of sunbrella. The work is top notch and will cost us less than a grand for everything. In Annoplis the best quote I got for the side skirts on the cockpit enclosure was $2,500 US. If you are doing major work I would consider Venezuela. Sorry to sound like a commerical!

Venezuela vs Cuba?
A 90 mile trip vs. a 2000+ mile trip, hard to weather and against a 2 knot current? Seems when that trip is done, you HAVE to do that cheap work. Your boat is beat to death. Location, location. That's why the work there is so cheap.

We are here-no damage, no problems
We made it down at what most people said was fairly quick. No damage, no minor issues..... If I were going to do major work it can be worth the time and the savings. Just for a hual out it wouldn't be cost effective unless you were going to stay and cruise.
