I think the ship /boat definition works

You can put a boat on a yacht, but you can't put a yacht on a boat.

for Me The Difference Between A Boat And A Yacht Is Determined By The Arrogance Of The Owner.
+100 :)

A good example is my friend Gerry who owns a very large power boat, three digits in length. Granite counter tops, hydraulic hide & seek TV, 115HP dinghy with crane, three fully stocked bars, wine cellar, 7 state rooms each with their own independent heat/AC systems, a full work shop & two 16 cylinder Cats that burn more fuel in a day than you and I can burn in our cars in a full year. He paid over 1 million just for his slip for his "boat".

Yes he refers to it as a BOAT! Why? Because despite being insanely wealthy he is the most humble, non-arrogant person you'd ever meet. He wears a Timex not a Rolex... Oh and the dinghy is called the dinghy not a "tender" and he has no full time paid captain. He "navigates" the vessel himself.. He does not suffer from male MIC (male inferiority complex) thus does not feel the need to refer to his boat as a yacht....;) I own a sailboat, it is not a yacht.

Here you go, a definition:

Yacht lengths generally range from 10 metres (33 ft) up to dozens of metres (hundreds of feet). A luxury craft smaller than 12 metres (39 ft) is more commonly called a cabin cruiser or simply a cruiser. A super yacht generally refers to any yacht (sail or power) above 24 m (79 ft) and a mega yacht generally refers to any yacht over 50 metres (164 ft). This size is small in relation to typical cruise liners and oil tankers.
I think that summarizes it well.

I've sailed boats up to 60' all over North America,Caribbean and Mexico. Some had values close to and maybe over 1/2 mil. But I never once thought I was sailing a "Yacht", although I have seen vessels that I would think are "Yachts".
I notice people sailing relatively small and inexpensive "vessels" often refer to their "Yacht".
So when does a boat become a Yacht? Is there a definitive cutoff or is it all up to a subjective decision, usually by the owner?
What do you have?
Mines a boat!
Yacht is the way you describe your boat to someone who has never seen it.:Liar: If you can't afford it, it's a yacht:D

I think MaineSail has it right, I've never heard a boat owner refer to his/her own boat as a yacht, no matter what the size or worth (and I known people with some really expensive boats). I have a boat, other people have yachts.

I like Jack Hornor's definition:
To me, whether a boat is a yacht or not has little to do with size but everything to do with quality, style and lasting appeal. Yachts turn heads when they sail by or enter an anchorage."

Matt
I like this definition. I call mine a yacht, and try to maintain it like one.

How about a "Ship"?

How about the difference between a boat and a ship?

You get on a ship, you get in a boat, at least that's pretty much how we called in in the Navy. I served in boats.

As to the boat/yacht distinction? depends on who I'm talking to, to my insanely jealous, not very bright sister it's the yacht, everybody else it's the boat. :D

I think it was Don Casey in "This Old Boat" that wrote "the difference between a boat and yacht is that a yacht can make ice".
