I've sailed boats up to 60' all over North America,Caribbean and Mexico. Some had values close to and maybe over 1/2 mil. But I never once thought I was sailing a "Yacht", although I have seen vessels that I would think are "Yachts".
I notice people sailing relatively small and inexpensive "vessels" often refer to their "Yacht".
So when does a boat become a Yacht? Is there a definitive cutoff or is it all up to a subjective decision, usually by the owner?
What do you have?
Mines a boat!

It depends who I'm talking to.
If people want to refer to my MacGregor 26D as a Yacht I let them. (It's mostly friends that have never sailed.)
I have heard my boat referred to as a "Trailer Sailor". The nerve of some.
I call it a sailboat. I just happen to keep it at the "Yacht Club" though.
(My 5 year old daughter refers to the members of the Yacht Club as the "Yachts." That includes us.)

By definition...

YACHT: A very large hole in the water into which unspeakable amounts of money are poured...........incessantly.

For me the difference between a boat and a yacht is determined by the arrogance of the owner.

Like pornography I can't define what makes a Yacht, but I can identify it when I see it.

This is a yacht
One possible definition, if it's got a satellite dish (for TV) that tracks while underway, it's a yacht.

I call mine a boat but always thought the definition of a yacht was any boat used for recreation.

Here you go, a definition:

A yacht /ˈjɒt/ is a recreational boat or ship. The term originated from the Dutch Jacht meaning "hunt".[note 1] It was originally defined as a light fast sailing vessel used by the Dutch navy to pursue pirates and other transgressors around and into the shallow waters of the Low Countries. After its selection by Charles II of England as the vessel to carry him to Britain from Holland for his restoration, it came to be used to mean a vessel used to convey important persons.
In modern use the term designates two rather different classes of watercraft, sailing and power boats. Yachts are different from working ships mainly by their leisure purpose, and it was not until the rise of the steamboat and other types of powerboat that sailing vessels in general came to be perceived as luxury, or recreational vessels. Later the term came to encompass motor boats for primarily private pleasure purposes as well.
Yacht lengths generally range from 10 metres (33 ft) up to dozens of metres (hundreds of feet). A luxury craft smaller than 12 metres (39 ft) is more commonly called a cabin cruiser or simply a cruiser. A super yacht generally refers to any yacht (sail or power) above 24 m (79 ft) and a mega yacht generally refers to any yacht over 50 metres (164 ft). This size is small in relation to typical cruise liners and oil tankers.

I guess it is supposed to start at 33 feet. You can usually document at 25 feet. Hrm.......

I have a YOT. I use it for sailing rather than yachting. Sailing being the act of transportation via wind. Yachting is hanging at the dock or club drinking and telling tall tales.

I keep it simple,

My one definition of a YACHT is a vessel where all the labor, maintenance, & polishing is done by others, not the owner.

And two, a YACHT (spelled the same but pronounced YAT CHET) is a vessel where the owner does almost all the work himself due to a smaller wallet.

I like Jack Hornor's definition:

"Recreational boats often are called yachts particularly by non-boaters. Most who own them simply think of themselves as boat owners and sailors. To me, whether a boat is a yacht or not has little to do with size but everything to do with quality, style and lasting appeal. Yachts turn heads when they sail by or enter an anchorage."

It's a yacht if you wear one of those little white hats with the anchors on it. Or if you are looking at a boat with a salesman or it's on Craigslist.

A yacht is for those pretentious few who are unable to lower their noses far enough to see that it's just a sailboat.

My favorite pick-up line is: "Is it alright if I lie about the size of my yacht as long as I don't ask you to paddle?"
