Does displacement weight include the keel or is that factored in differently

Displacement is the total weight of the boat including ballast. Usually the ballast weight is reported seperately.
There is a dry displacement and a wet displacement weight that includes water and fuel.
In smaller boats such as the some trailer sailer boats the ballast can be in the form of a heavy metal centerboard.

Yeah... as Ross said, it is the weight (mass) of the water that is displaced by the boat as it sinks into the water. Once you have displaced a mass equal to the mass of your boat, it will float. So displacement includes everything.... including you and what you had for lunch...;)

Which amazingly always exactly equals the weight of the boat and everything on it!

the water displaced by ENTIRE boat is the displacement weight. yes engine yes keel yes all except things you stuff it with and you and your cat or dog.

And the displacement stated in the brochure does not include the three anchors you've acquired, the 300 foot of chain, the extra mainsail and jib, the spare engine parts. You know, all the stuff you've accumulated but forgot where it was until AFTER you needed it.

Yeah, got that t-shirt, too.

It also means you will displace more fresh water than salt water and have less room under the keel as a result.

And for your trailer sailors...I read where a guy took his trailer to a truck stop and used the truck scales to weigh his car and trailer while the boat was in the water... then weighed it again with boat in tow on his way home from the lake ... difference = boat displacement.
