Prices are killing me

Up to $0.24 in gasoline costs everytime I go boating! These high gas prices are killing me! But I baby my old Tohatsu 5 with supreme. Happy boating all.

Trip cost

I do a rough cost of what a day sail costs by dividing total costs by days sailed and then look at the cost of cruise ships per day. Things seem pretty even.

Alright Hunter23ontravis

Go take a bath and get a good book and get to bed! :);) One of our power boat slip mates took his boat to the end of the fuel dock, filled up and came back muttering about the bill being $420. Damn Greg I only used 26 gals last year. I then found myself in the water wondering how I was going to get back on the dock!! Jim S/V Java

She stoped asking

I was asked all the time how much was it this time? Now i have a new boat and dont get asked any more, and we all get along better this way, they have a card and we pay it monthly, there is even some times the card is still empty. We sit on her at night and during those hours we have the best talks and other things, that makes the boat priceless.

Cost of boating, value of boating.

Some people know the price of everything and the value of nothing. I do not care what the cost happens to be only whether or not I am able to derive pleasure from my time on the water.

Your kidding right?

I stopped counting:) Kinda like asking about the mileage on a Mercedes 500...if you gotta ask, you don't need to buy it! Buy Amerian as in "how much is it a month":)

Amen !

I can't imagine a person so "possessed of demons" that they would ruin one of life's greatest pleasures by calculating what pleasure costs. Everything costs. Get over it !!!!!!!!!!!!!

So What

I'm at an age where I have friends comming down with dreded diseases, dying etc. So what if it costs xxx dollars if you can afford it and your not hurting anyone else go for it. Someone said, "When your old and unable to do the things you want, it will be what you didn't do not what you did that you'll regret." There are all levels of sailing pick one you can afford and enjoy it.

RICH

To roughly quote J.P. Morgan, "If you must ask the price...you can't afford to even think about it". BTW thermal energy used on sailboats for propulsion (wind) is virtually free.

Frequently I hear...

John Ritter whispering in my ear, saying, "do it now, tomorrow is not guaranteed." So, most of the time, I do. My boat is not such a financial drain that it causes hardship to anyone else in the family, and I probably spend a lot less than a serious golfer.

I used to spend way more

on golf and skiing trips. My boat sits across the bay from a resort hotel where people spend more in one day than I do for an entire month on boating. In reality, I think I'm saving money by owning a sailboat.

Rough Estimate

I keep a "rough estimate" on what it costs me each year, then I divide that by how many times I go sailing. If I go once, and spend $4000 in slip fees, repairs, and upgrades, that means that trip cost me 4k that year. On the other hand, if I go out 200 times, that comes to about $20 per trip. Not too bad. As you can see, I HAVE to go sailing frequently, or I can't afford the sport. That's why I count the money.

WHAT !!!!!

Never in all the years I have been sailing have I even considered adding up the cost. My wife has asked, but never pursued the answer being the good wife she is. Maybe when I am too old and physically incapable of sailing, I will try to remember all the costs. But, by then I may not even be able to remember.

What Price Freedom!

Everything in life worth experiencing has a cost. If you have to count every nickel and dime, become an accountant and work a calculator not a compass. A general idea or range is good enough for me.

why work

The only reason to work is to be able to have the things we enjoy. Why would you exist if you couldn't enjoy life. Money in the bank is way overrated.

Cheaper than a Shrink!

Sailing, pure and simple, is therapy. You can spend your money on your boat or you can spend it on a shrink...Me? I'd rather be out on the Gulf of Mexico swilling an O'douls and thanking God that I'm not home cutting the grass. I can endure the worst week imaginable at work just to make to that Saturday afternoon sail!

Relaxed and Smart

We are entering our third season with Inspiration and Play, and I figure I have one more expensive (new sails) off season to go before she is where I want her. The interesting thing about the seasons up here in the north is we sail and don't spend much money, the we are on the hard spending like crazy. Fortunately I am smart enough and cheap enough that the yard gets mooring, hauling, and storage fees, and I handle all the labor. Getting a $600 quote to replace motor mounts is just a touch crazy. The value is Memorial Day on Narragansett Bay, Warm, Sunny 8 - 12 knot breeze... That relaxation response as I am writing this is worth every penny.

Cheap Thrill compared to most....

It's a HOBBY. If you're keeping track of how much you spend on it, how much fun could it possibly be?

What is expensive?

I keep track of most pruchases for the boat in my Quicken Account because I use a debit card at the marine stores, but there are a few cash items that get lost in the season. I do this only to make sure I provide enough money in next years budget. I am a retired school teacher on a fix income and so try to budget carefully so I am albe to enjoy my boat to the fullest. I have to plan major purchases and have develop a little emergency fund that is there in case there is a major breakdown. If you put a cost per hour on owning and using a boat you are missing the whole point in boat owning. Enjoyment and relaxation and if you are worrying about how much it cost each rip you should probaly get out of it.

Soooo $$$ vs pleasure...pleasure wins!

I don't keep it down to the last cent, but it costs me roughly $200/mo year around to have the boat in the water for about 6mo/yr. Fortunatly the boat is paid for....these are just 'operating/pleasure' costs. If we had to keep track of every cent...who'd ever buy or keep a boat of any kind?
