Caution

Have never done it personally but know many that have. First thing to recognize is that some companies are only brokers for independent haulers. I would avoid them since they can not guarantee euipment used etc.. Delivery dates are rarely firm and the more lucrative jobs get pushed ahead despite promises made and you may have to wait for a backload. Beware of trusting a yard to prepare the boat for shipment unless ypu are present. It helps to take pictures of how the boat is rigged and the condtion before the boat is moved. It is a very rough ride so stow gear accordingly. The dirt from the road and soot from the truck diesel is a bear to get off. Look into getting the boat wrapped or wax it thoroughly prior to shipment to protect the finish. Double check and get in writing insurance coverage. Your boat insurance probably will not cover transport and who knows what the hauler has in place. Good luck with your shipment.

Catalina 320 Buffalo, NY
Charleston, SC to Buffalo, NY

Shipped my Catalina 320 from Charleston, SC to Buffalo, NY 3 weeks ago. Called several companies. Found a hauler from the Buffalo area shipping a truck South and got a good price on bringing mine back North. Truckers are always looking for return loads and price accordingly. Check for insurance. You can figure around $3 or so a mile for a base cost. Preping the boat, loading and unloading will increase your cost. I had quotes from $800 to almost $2800 for prep and loading. If I can answer any other questions contact me off site CDickhut2@aol.com

Try this

There's a boat hauler out of St. Augustine who works the East Coast. He's reasonably priced because he avoids dead-head trips, and his boats arrive safe and sound. If you want more, email me at bodonovan@vagazette.com

Suggestion

Check with borkers of new boats in your area ( Catalina, Beneteau, Hunter, etc) and find out who they use. Also if your boat is headed in the general direction of one of the manufacturers then maybe you can work out a deal that's beneficial to both of you in reducing cost by eliminating a return trip with an empty trailor.
