I have a Beneteau Oceanis 281 that has bow damage and has to be transported to a fiberglass shop. The cost to transport it is so much I think I can buy a trailer and do it myself with my Jeep Cherokee. Anyone know if this is a wise thing to do or not? Also, anyone got a trailer for rent or sale? thanks

It all depends...again

I had to shop for a trailer for my First 235 two years ago. I got extremely lucky and found a used/demo alum. pontoon trailer that I could modify easily, and it still ran me $2,400. A new one would have cost 3,200. For a boat the size of yours, I'd bet it would be more than $3,500 to purchase a trailer. This would be a worthwhile investment if you didn't want to rely on near-water storage, or had a free or cheap place to store the boat. If this is just for getting to the shop, I imagine the transport would be cheaper. If your transport costs are higher than the numbers I've posted here, Your being ripped off! I was looking into having an S2 27 transported from Detroit, MI to St. Paul MN, and it was only going to be $1,500. You'll also need special permits, because the beam of the boat is wider than the 8'6" legal limit.

Forgot to mention this... Unless your Jeep is a Grand Cherokee with a V8, and the towing distance is flat and short, I wouldn't attempt it with the Cherokee. That is unless you like replacing transmissions! The weight of the boat and trailer will probably even tax the Grand Cherokee.
