I recently bought a 1990 Hunter 28. I live in a desert so I need a trailer for this boat. It has a wing keel weighs 7400 lbs. Does anyone know of a source for a new or used trailer for this boat? Also, has anyone devised a mast raising system for this boat?

There is a mast raising system, its called a crane. A trailer will need to be custom built, a three axle job will do with a tongue extension. It will require a long steep ramp for launching as well as pretty strong tow vehicle to pull it out of the water. With water, fuel and supplies the weight will ballon to 9,000 lbs. Hardly a trailerable. An h26 with a water ballast designed expressly to be trailerable would have been a wiser choice.

Trailering a Hunter 28
We "desert sailors" regularly tow our sailboats (up to 32 ft) to San Diego, Los Angeles, Bellingham, WA, etc. and back. My Hunter 28 will be amongst the smaller boats this summer. We sail as far north as Alaska and south to Cabo San Lucas.

I Have been rasing, lowering and trailoring my 1992 Hunter 27 for three years now. So far so good, with exception of some stress on my wife and a frayed side stay (see general interst post). I have some pictures to share if your interested, Ill dig them up. I purchased the boat and trailer already set up with this mast raising rig. I have to give credit to the previous owner for their enginering skills. Every year I try to tweak it to make it easier. Currently it takes 3 to 5 hours to raise, rig and launch the boat. As for towing, I admit I am at the limit (or beyound) with my half ton truck. Luck has it, I only live 5 miles from the launch.

Trailering Keel Boats
With boat of that type, size, and larger, I have seen some very interesting rigs; one built upon the chassis of a former low boy with a dolled up second hand semi tractor to pull it. These were also used as the cradle for their off season storage. One thing in common though was that they all had a marina step the mast and splash the boat with a travel lift vs a ramp launch.
