Boat to put my old engine in

(This isn't EXACTLY sailboat-related, but... well, the engine IS out of a sailboat, and there's lots of Classic Boat people here)

I have a very old 10hp Volvo diesel engine, taken out of my sailboat. She's kinda taken apart right now, but I hope to get her running again this weekend. So: what boat should I put it in? Its main attraction is the sound - it will idle down to an incredible POOK....POOK...POOK.... so I'd like to match the engine to a suitable hull.

I'll be just putting round the lower Fraser River, maybe out into Howe Sound occasionally, fishing for salmon or just exploring and lazing about.

I keep thinking of a Grand Banks Dory ("I's the b'y that builds the boats..."). The style would match well and they're incredibly seaworthy, but...
1. being that narrow, it would be hard to get around the engine (mounted amidships) and I'd have to find a place to put the fuel tank, etc.
2. Again, being fairly small and narrow, there's not a lot of room for passengers, gear, easy chair, galley...
3. It wouldn't look right with any kind of roof, so if I was to run it in the rain, I'd get WET.



My other option is something like an Atkins "Sixteen Two" - more work to build, not as classic a look, but more room insids and I think I could put on some kind of hardtop to duck under on rainy days, and maybe a "mini-galley" to at least make a pot of coffee.

I even thought of "powerboat-izing" a Cal 20, but that would be blasphemy! (I need shallow draft and low overhead to get around the Fraser)

Any thoughts?

I'd consider something like a Duffy. They're roofed, a dry stack would look salty as Hell and I'd also think about keel pipes for cooling.

You mean like the Duffy electric boats? Interesting... but they're REALLY beamy and pretty much full-displacement. I'm hoping to get more than 5 knots out of it. I think the Sixteen Two would end up looking similar to the Duffy, but narrower and hopefully more semi-displacement (Mr. Atkins claims 10-11 mph...)

And dry-stack: probably! :D Donno about keel-cooling - KISS, and on the Fraser, there's a REALLY good chance you'll hit something or run aground once in a while.

I would put it into an "african queen" style boat with a stack and everything! otherwise it would go good in an old school launch or lobster boat.

"african queen" style is kinda where I'd go with the Sixteen Two hull. Do you have pics or plans for a 14-18ft version? Lobsta boat is really East-Coast, and most are rounded hulls - way hard to build!

old lifeboat. :)

At the RCYC (Toronto) there's currently a nice 16'ish open wooden boat on a trailer for sale, rumour has it that it could be had for $2500. It's missing the engine, which was a one-cyl Yanmar. I saw it Thursday.

LOL - well, that's a BIT far from Vancouver (like 4000 miles...), but I'll contact the local Lifeboat Society and see what they say. Most of what they run around in are bigger than I want, but you never know...

PS - might be a tad longer before I get the engine fired up - turns out the rocker arm shaft is broken as well as the stud. Anybody parting out an MD6A?

When I was a kid growing up in Riviera Beach FL. One of theboats used by local fishermen were Flaties
They were flat bottom hard chine work boats they had a cross planked hull and were constructed of southern yellow pine and some times cypress. Later boats were plywood skinned. The boat was usually powered by a single lung diesel and it made a great pop-pop- pop sound as it moved along.

I rebuilt the YSm12 in my C30. I bought a 2QM20 to rebuild, but appears to have already been rebuilt. I am going to put some parts on it to make it more reliable make sure everything checks out and put that in the C30.
I want to do the same thing with my ysm12; find a little power boat to put it in. I saw one in the boat yard that I liked. But I didn't take a picture and can't find one on the internet.
Looking from the top the boat was almost square. It had an in board diesel that was right in the middle of the boat. It had a hard top that covered the whole boat. The boat was 40 or 50 years old. Maybe one of a kind. It was pretty flat underneath but the front did come to a V.

Edit: I found this boat that is shaped like it in the pic.

Go dowm to the 7th annual Richmond Marintine Festival at the Britannia Heritage Shipyard in Steveston this weekend and talk to the old timers that are restoring wooden boats. They might be interested in the motor and/or, if you have the time, you may become interested in working with them.
