i have a Catalina 310 and at anchour or on a mooring bouy as soon as the wind gets above 10 knots the boat sails / swings about 45degs
Was thinking about a righting sail ?
Any other ideas ?

sounds like it might be a question of why it swings wind may be blowing one way but what about tide . a righting sail is a good idea. but you could also kedge if its in a tight place

Swing on the 310 seem to be normal as we swing every time at anchor and have tried placing the rudder at different positions with no change. All we have done is make sure that when we anchor we have a large swing room or stern tie.

We just bought an Anchor Riding sail at a Nautical consignment shop and have NOT tried it out yet, when we anchor we put the rudder centered. We have not experienced a lot of Horsing, but for what little we have invested in this sail, it will be worth it if it works as planned.

its easy to prevent...
when the boat is at its farthest point of the swing and starting back, toss out another anchor.... pay out the rode until the boat is about halfway to the other side of its swing radius and set down on the rode so the anchor digs in.......

now, pull in some of the rode before snubbing it down so you are off to one side a bit and not directly down wind/current of your bower. with your boat, depending on its design and loading, you may have to experiment whether cleating it at the stern or the bow works best for you, but I find cleating at the stern works great.

what this will do is hold the boat sprung off to one side so it cant get up and momentum to start its swinging/anchor dance. you dont need much scope for this to work, and it even works in shifty winds.

In high winds I have used a 5 lb mushroom anchor from our dinghy. Lowered straight down to the bottom off our stern it slows things down and greatly reduces the amplitude. As the wind clocks and tides change we still swing with everyone else.

The C310 does tend to swing at anchor, and I have had some success using a riding sail. You would want to experiment a bit with the tension on the tack line. Sometimes a little less tension allows the sail to "snap" over center and slow down the swing more quickly. In addition, I like to run nylon snubbers from the bow cleats over the bow roller and then to the chain rode. This seems to cut down on the swinging quite a bit.

Any 310 owners with in-mast furling figured out how to mount a riding sail?

Look at the photo of our boat in the thread I posted the link to. You need only a backstay and the boom, centered and sheeted in tight......
