Boat Speed

As a general rule I don't worry much about boat speed, or 24 hour distance traveled. Just enjoy what ever I got. However on a recent 3 week trip with a friend on a H36, we had what I would consider a perfect 24 hour run. Returning to New Orleans from Tampa, we had a 24 hour run of 176 miles. Steering a basic WNW course, and a very steady SE wind right at 15 knots. Just don't get much better.

I'd say that is pretty good! The TransPac 2015 yachts in Divisions 7 & 8, some of which are close to the size of yours and leading, are reporting 196 to 174 n.mi. in the latest 24-hr run. Two, a J-44 and a Beneteau First 40, were at 175 & 174 n.mi., respectively. Celerity, a Santa Cruz 37, leading at 1st overall, was at 196 n.mi. If you've got good wind and favorable current, might even see 200 some day!

Boring

For me it was more than likely a once in a lifetime feat. And to be honest became almost boring. Never trimming sails, altering course, tacking etc. for 24 hours gives you nothing to do but watch the world go by. Which of course isn't bad either. Usually in the gulf this time of year, you are more likely to get dead calms than steady reliable winds. Or else middle of the night thunderstorms.

Re: Boring

I suppose the good news is that you don't have to keep it up for 10-12 days! How much fun could that be?!

Coming anywhere close to 200NM/day when you are not in the trades is a big deal. Its hard to find wind that reliable in speed and direction anywhere else.

You might have to blame this performance ...

Oh Please! Get a grip. It is an El Nino year. More rain on the Gulf Coast with the winds that go with it.

On our Seattle to Hawaii trip in a C&C 41 we racked up 204 and 202 in consecutive days. The norm was about 180. SS

That's averaging 7.3 kts, which is good in anybody's book. Nice sailing!
