Boat Soaps Are Just Too Gentle

We just removed the shrink wrap and washed the decks with some liquid pink RV-Boat Cleaner stuff. (It was sold at a boat store "Maguires" product). The non-skid still has these black spots (even tried scrubbing). We want it claen and are tired of screwing around. I am told that the black spots are mold. Anyways, give us a hint about a serious boat wash that we can use to clean our decks. We just paid to have the hull waxed, so if we wash the decks, will it remove the wax as is runs down the sides of our boat as we rinse it off? Thank you all...

Serious boat wash

It's been my experience that if you use "serious" boat wash it will remove wax. I have had good results with West Marine's WM Boat Soap. It almost seemed like it had a bleaching effect. But I use the WM's Crystal now to preserve the wax. Crystal is not a serious boat wash. If you scrub just the deck and then rinse fast and well, it might not affect the wax on the topsides (hull), because it will be diluted and have a short exposure. You might also try West Marine's Citrus Boat Cleaner. I've heard rumors that a bathroom mold remover like Tilex can get your black mold specks.

Try the non-skid cleaners.

Jenny: We get this same stuff in our non-skid. We use the non-skid cleaners. Just squirt the stuff around the deck and brush it in. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes and then scrub the decks with a good brush. It make take a couple of treatments but it usually gets the job done. Most of these products contain oxalic acid.

Mold removal

I've had success removing mold/mildew by using a mild bleach solution in a 1:10 dilution. Wear rubber gloves, scrub with a brush, and rinse well with plenty of water. Good luck!

Jenny, I've had good luck with Softscrub...

the bath, tub and tile cleaner. Works great on most any boat surface including gelcoat. I also used it to clean mold from our soft cabin liner four years ago and it has yet to return. Terry

Power Washer

The best way I've found to clean the deck is to use regular deck scrub. Put it on, rub it in, let it sit and rinse it off with a power washer. The one I use is around 1300 psi, which is relatively small as power washers go. No bird stains, spider crud or anything left. If it's really nasty, I resoak, scrub a little and blast it again. The deck looks great and the non-skid is bright. Be careful around any wood, though.

Where are you washing?

Some of these solutions do not sound like the boat is in the water. What is safe and what is not for washing the boat when she is in her slip?

Safe

may be a relative term. There are bio-degradable cleaners like West Marine Citrus, but even it will affect the water quality at the marina. Some cleaning can be done with vinegar and baking soda, but lots of elbow grease is required. The best results I have had on non-skid has been to pressure wash the deck. Only water is used and it looks great.

Starbrite Nonskid cleaner w/teflon...

works well on nonskid only...for other brightwork areas, we use the non-marine version of Roll-off (Wesley's White Wall Cleaner...be careful though...very strong concentrated). One of my sailing buddies told me that Wesley's is the same as Roll-Off, but, about half the price...

Prior to washing....

...spray the stubborn areas with Tilex. It will remove the mildew leaving a very clean surface. The sailors in my harbor use it often. Also, a product available along the Gulf Coast is "Rig Wash". Sold in gallon jugs, this pink colored clearner is used by shrimpers and fishing boats to scrub topsides very clean. Due to its concentration, it must be diluted with water. Along with being enviromentally friendely, it will clean the most stubborn stains leaving the boat shiny and clean smelling. The downside of Tilex and Rig Wash is they both remove wax.

Any one know...

If the various different boat washes are available in stores such as WalMart and K-Mart? Save of course the WM products.
