Boat slip blues

slipless

I bought my boat in February and spent weeks searching for a slip. I finally sub-let a slip and overpaid but hey, I had a spot. Then yesterday, there's this note on my boat. It seems that the city of L.A. is remodling my marina and I have 60 days to be out. There are no vacancies anywhere. Anyone know anything about slip vacancies in Marina del Rey or Los Angeles or anywhere else around that might have a slip available for a 36' sailboat? Long Beach has a waiting list of 5 years. I'm depressed. Pardon my rant.........but my boat is soon to be homeless.........

sink it

Slipless, Pay up your insurance, sink the boat and buy a new boat after the slips are remodeled. The boat will provide a nice reef for the fish in a few hundred years and maybe by that time SM bay will be clean enough to support fish. Buy a submarine next time. Slippery

Where Are The Slips

Wow Slippery what's your problem. Maybe one day you'll have the same dilemma and we can all makes jokes at your expense. Slipless, check out the link below. It's a link to all of the slips in Southern California, etc. Good Luck, Dave

Thanks Slippery for higher insurance rates

Why is it that to some people "insurance" is this big pot of money that we all can dip into and it doesn't hurt anyone. I'm not just talking about boats either. I work in an industry that deals a lot with home owners and see this same con game occuring on a daily basis. Why not just go rob a bank, it's the same thing. Like bank robbery, insurance fraud is a felony, you just don't have to wear a mask.

Think Ensenada?

Cheaper slips, cheaper boat yards, cheaper living, no more California state taxes, great sheltered sailing between Ensenada and Todos Santos islands and an occasional fast beam reach passage to Guadeloupe and back to hone your offshore skills..... Just an idea. Flying Dutchman

Moorings in Newport are $5/day

you can stay up to 30 days if you need a temp. place during interim. Friend of mine is supposed to be getting a 35' in Dana after being on wait list for 5 years. Check the The Log guide, good luck.

The marinas in the LA and LB Harbor areas are where you want to try. They are all that's available. Otherwuse go north to Ventura/Channel Islands or south to San Diego. You could try Oceanside. However, I think I'd do what Henk suggests and go to Ensenada BC. Rick D.

what about a drive?

what about near by. You may have to drive a bit but could be worth it.. Marinas out here charge mooring fees of 100$ basicaly to use there docks to hold your dingy..

Thanks for the responses!

Thanks for all the suggestions--all except the one that suggests sinking the boat! I have been working all day getting onto waiting lists. I've been told that my mistake is in not offering a "finders fee". Do you know anything about this practice, Rick D.?????

Finder's Fee

Of course, that's a bribe *grr . It was a popular source of secondary dockmaster income when I moved into MDR thirty years ago. It is worth a shot. The going rate used to be about twice the monthly slip rent. You would have to be VERY discreet and subtle about it today. I really do not know how much is going on. The way it might be approached is to first go through the broker you purchased the boat through and let them know you are willing to pay a finders' fee and how much (they will wind up splitting it). If you did not go through a broker, check with each dockmaster and tell them that if they know someone who could locate a slip with a finders fee to tell you. If someone is on the take, they will figure out how to let you know. Be sure you tell them how much you are willing to pay for the 'fee'. Again, it's been a long time, so I may be out of the loop. Rick D. PS: which marina are you in?

Ok, don't sink it...burn it!

Sinking a vessel may prove to be more difficult than imagined. It could take several days to sink or not sink completely at all. So...just burn it. Exercise caution and give your neighbors proper consideration (i.e. don't burn their boats). You may even save the county some demolition fees. Excellent reponses people. I do hope slipless finds his/her slip. Dave - Great link but lighten up. Brian...The post was written with a healthy dose of sarcasm that you failed to pick up on. I trust you read the wind better than posts. FYI, Insurance fraud is NOT the equivalent of bank robbery. While neither can be condoned, bank robbery typically involves weapons to accompany the "mask" as you so aptly mentioned. Perhaps you more correctly intended to suggest that they are both larcenies or a type of theft. Now take your shots and hopefully I will keep quiet for the good of this site. Regards, Slippery

Thanks again for all responses!

WOW -- I didn't mean to upset you, Slippery. You're just being funny, eh? I'm on so many waiting lists now that hopefully, I'll be turning down offers soon! I'm thinking about the "finders fee" thing--it might just work. Thanks, Rick D. Oh yes, I sublet my slip in Basin D.

tks

I feel your pain

I believe your best bet would be Long Beach or Newport Beach (very expensive!), or perhaps (as indicated) going way south to Ensenada. I have been in Dana Point for a couple of years and the wait is longer than ever. Expect a 3-5 year wait for a 38' slip. It will be interesting to see if the recent rate increase (I believe it is $587.00 for that size) will drive out some of tenents.

I just got on the list for Oceanside, wait is about 4 years (costs $80, too) for a 34-36 ft slip. You might call down to Chula Vista, or the LA/San Pedro Marina's. On the other hand, Air fare to Oakland from Long Beach is about 200 R/T. You could probably get a slip up there and dedicate one weekend a month to sailing on SF Bay.

slips ahoy

Basically you are right. slips are not too available in the L.A. area. Your best bet is to try Cabrillo Marina in San Pedro. They are the old old docks, but for a temp slip they will do. Spent a year plus there and hated it, but I wasnt driving hundreds of miles. Figured out that being on the water and not in the slip helped a lot. good luck and best thoughts.....bob

That's all?

I was going to say we seem to have just the right number of slips here, but after my $268 payment for a 38' slip compaired to your $80 for a 36', I guess I know why now.

Somehow...

...I don't think slips in that part of California are $80. My guess is that that $80 was the price of the honor to be on a list.

Terminal Island and Miner Street

I went through same problem last year but was still on list as my originally entry date at Long Beach on boat upgrade from Alamitos Bay. It took me three months to get into Downtown from the top of the list. You will not get more than a temporary at Long Beach for now but they are offering them during the reconstruction. You can get a slip at Al Larson's on Terminal Island, also check out Cabrillo Way (former Fleitz Brothers)and Holiday Harbor on Miner Street at the end of Harbor Blvd, past Ports of Call. The reason I suggest those first is that they are closest to the breakwater. If no luck there you can then work your way back the Main and Cerritos Channel to the marinias off of the Terminal Island freeway back behind the Helm Bridge (Draw Bridge on TI). Al Larson's is the best bet - you need to talk to them and they will find you space. Go in person and use the charm. No offence but they get alot of less-desireables so they tend to treat more reliable people pretty good in an effort to upgrade their tenants. Its very inexpensive for obvious reasons but its OK - not bad. I think we paid $208 a month for 36 footer. Beam is an issue there - but they have side ties associated with the Boat Yard that they will put you in until something comes up. If you are less than 10'beam you should be able to get right in - its not fancy but the history of Fish Harbor - what more could you ask for. And in respone to others Long Beach has the most reasonable fees for first rate marinas in SoCal (i.e. MDR, New Cabrillo, Newport, Dana Point). I'm at $349 for a 36 footer with new docks coming and most likely higher fees eventually.

Monty's right, the $80 is just to be on the

wait list. Right now I pay $311/month for a Catalina 270 in a 25' slip, this is the charge for 28' of boat. Charge is for length of boat or dock whichever is greater of course.A 33' slip is $450 & a 38' is $557. End ties are $18.95/ft./month. And of course they are going up every year.
