I have heard several times that if you know which "new boat" you want buy you will get your best deal at one of the big boat show's.

Any truth to that?

I think you will find that they have factory incentives at the shows. Most of the time they are throwing in extras that they would not do at other times.

During these times, they are going to be better deals than when boats are really selling well.

Seconding Steve Dion. If you're shopping for new, a serious boatshow is probably the best opportunity to get a discount without having to negotiate hard (and also the best opportunity for hard negotiators to do even better).

Besides factory incentives, dealers often have had to commit to sell X units per year in order to satisfy the manufacturer, so show sales are an important kickstart to the year.

Example, back at the dawn of time (early 80s) I decided I wanted to buy a windsurfer. At a boating/cottage show, I went back and forth between booths and finally got a package that included complete board and rig, wetsuit, PFD and roofrack, for little more than the MSRP of the board & rig itself.

Best Time

Yes it is the best time to buy I found that out when shopping for a new boat.
If the dealer has some thing in stock he is even more willing to let go for less at the boat show or at other times is also possible,it all depends on what is going on like right now I think things are slow.
When I was shopping to buy a bigger boat and I also was looking to trade in,I kept shopping around for the best possible deal.
I really wanted a new 2007 Hunter 36 and the dealer told me he had two 2006 H-36 in stock that I could get them at a real good discount price but I wanted certain things in my new H 36 that the 2006 in stock did not have.
At the time was the Newport boat show and Hunter was giving some factory incentives to make me a better deal on the 2007 H 36 and they sweeten the deal on my trade in when I added some $$$$$ extra equipment in the boat.
But times are different right now than in 2007 when they were selling more new boats,I would think they will sweeten the price on a boat at a boat show for sure now,but they would be selling some thing in stock at a good price most any time.

There is another angle to boat shows. If you contact a dealer prior to the show you can purchase a boat and let them take it to the show. The dealer will offer you all the show specials and then discount the price because they used your boat and delayed delivery. It can be a real sweet deal.

Make sure any such agreement includes full restoration of show wear and tear.
