Anybody have an idea - "Ball park-wise" on what it might cost to ship a '26-foot, 5,500 lb. sailboat from NYS to MD, about 350 miles? Is there a "dollars per mile" rule of thumb, or does it "just depend?" Thanks for any insight.

At $3.25 per gallon for diesel and 5 miles per gallon it would be 140 gallons round trip or $455 for fuel. Then add time, probably 24 hours at a minimum of $15/hour is another $360 plus labor to load and unload the boat and you're over $1,000. This doesn't include wear and tear on the vehicle which is where the shipper makes his profit. Hope this helps

price was $4 per mile. I had other quotes that ranged from $4.25 to $5. You might could do better but Bruce's prices are about right for anyone. If the boat has it's own trailer, it could be a lot cheaper, just make sure all the trailer systems are in A-1 condition. Also, don't forget the decommissioning and recommisioning charges if you have someone do it for you. Good Luck!

My local sail loft charges in the neigborhood of $3.00/mile to haul boats, but this was before the recent gas price increases. (It helps if your already one of their customers.)

I priced it about 2 weeks ago in Florida. Approx. $2.50/mile (they only charge on the distance one way) and a boat the size of yours will probably run about $350 to decomission and another $350 to recommission and dont forget the haul out and haul back in yard fees.

Shipping out Tuesday
My boat that is now slipped on Pickwick Lake east of Memphis, TN is being loaded on Tuesday of next week to be shipped to Seabrook, TX, on Galveston Bay - a mapquest distance of approximately 700 miles. No idea of the actual distance the truck will have to travel because of permits, etc. It is a Catalina 380, and my shipping costs are $2600. If you figure by the mile, that's about $3.71 per mile.

Thanks folks - I'm looking at about 325 miles. Sounds like I should budget two grand (ouch) for the whole enchilada. I'm looking at a 20 year-old, "good old boat" that is of solid, seaworthy design, but I will not go to sea in a boat that I don't "know" yet - would like to find the drain plug in my own backyard first

DIY option.
I have a friend who was in a similar situation recently and wanted to save some money so he rented a Budget moving truck - the smallest one they had - to haul his boat home himself. When he went to pick up the truck, they were out of the small ones and upgraded him to much larger, and harder to drive, truck with even poorer gas mileage. And when he got to the boat, the mast was still up, the trailer tires were flat and the lights didn't work. It made for quite a trip and a long couple of days. Paying someone to haul the boat is worth it.

Finally ready to take a few days off and go back to get the boat - job down here hasn't allowed me the time to get away until now. I happened to see that water on Saturday. That's when I came down and signed the lease for my slip in Seabrook Marina. Thanks for the welcome, I'm missing the boat sorely....

It's not like you're taking on the Panama canal, just sail 'er on down thar... I met some Russian guys who had sailed cross the Med, Atlantic and were in New Zealand in a 26ft glass boat. Any of you 'Kemah' mates run into Mr. Dick Frenzel or Jay Stormer? With your yard fees it would likely be cheaper to hire a skipper to take it the 350nm it is normally a daily rate or milage.

3.50 per NM or less in some cases or 350.00 per 24hr day. You could fall into a 'minimum' where you contract for a certain price; try 750 + the crews meals and transport + fuel of course.

The boat's near Albany, New York. That's quite a bit more than 4 days sail to my house, if you allow for weather. Transient slip fees would doubtless eat up any savings in between weekends. Not to mention cab fare home on Sunday nights....
