BOAT SERIAL NUMBER

O'day 28 Casco Bay
I will try to add some insight as I work with boatbuilders and have also spoken to Rudy Nickerson regarding the subject of how many O'day 28s were actually built.

1. Back in the days when FRP was a relatively new boatbuilding material, builders would start a serial production run at hull #100 or 101. The thinking was that nobody wanted hull #1 and it also eliminated the need to skip #13. There are builders who still do one or the other.

2. The three digit number is question is the build sequence number. In my case it is 0624 and the vessel was constructed in May of 1985. I spoke w/ Rudy about this and he checked his records and said that 544 OD 28s were built and this agrees with what is published on Sailboatdata.com.

3. This would mean that the boat in question would be the 559th constructed, and that is a mystery. It could be that it is actually 539 and whoever put the insert into the mold made a mistake.
