Boat selling question

I'll soon be selling my C 22. Here is my dilemma: I currently have a slip, but would like to get out from under the rent payment. It will be at least a couple of months before the boat will be ready for sale. So, I wonder...is a slip more likely to help me sell the boat, or should I give it up? There is a trailer, by the way.

Probably not

If you are renting the slip, then it appears it is not yours to sell. Further, does your lease permit you to sublease your slip to someone else and if so, under what conditions. Further, most prospective boat purchasers will wish to view the hull of the boat out of the water which may aid in whatever survey they wish to perform. It may be best to have the boat on the trailer with the mast raised and the boom and main sail on so it looks like it is ready to sail. And don't forget the importance of an immaculate interior. Interiors sell boats. So put in some fake flowers, plates and dishes ready for a meal, and a few nautically inspired pillows, just like in the brochures. I do think that a boat in a slip ready to sail away has a lot of appeal, but if there is only months or weeks left on the slip rental, then maybe that appeal is diminished and it becomes more important to see the boat's hull out of the water.

see the bottom

Hi, I recently bought a C22, so I can give you some things that affected me. First, I would always want to see the bottom and keel, so if the boat was in the water it would have to come out anyway. I agree with Bayard, the interior is very important. I looked at a number of boats that clearly were unloved, and it really showed in the interior. The cushions were worn out and threadbare, and there was dirt and grime. Not a good appearance. Same thing topsides, some boats were dirty. I ended up buying a boat from people who clearly loved her - covers over the wood, sails clean and stored in bags, cushions in nice shape, and the boat was clean. Good luck, Barry

Thanks

The slip is transferable, so no big deal there. I have already purchased a share in a racing yacht, hence the need to sell Mrs. Chippy. Thanks again.
