My 473 seems slow under power. The hull is free of marine growth. The boat is equipped with a standard 3 blade fixed prop. The engine is Yanmar 75 hp. It doesn't seem to want to move unless I have the engine turning in excess of 3000 rpms. Has anytone else experienced this?

No net

Thanks, but there is nothing wrapped around the prop. I have a friend with a Beneteau 50 that "walks away" from me under power. I can't figure it out.

Bottom of the keel

Have you had the boat out of the water? If so have you checked the bottom of the keel? I've seen barnacles, marine growth, etc. that were on the bottom of the keel while the hull was clean. Needless to say I had a similiar issue with a lack of speed. Now when I have mine hauled I always insist they do a thorough job on the keel bottom. Don't mention and inspect it and many will just do a once over leaving an opportunity for a problem once the boat has been in the water for a while. Don't forget the prop as well. Barnacles love them and do a nice job of reducing their efficiency.

What is a decent speed?

With a clean hull and keel my 473 with a 75 hp yanmar will do 6.5 knots at 2300 rpm and close to 7 knots at 2800 rpm.

473 must be a slow motorer

My 393 with a 54 horse yanmar can go faster than that at similar revs. And that's fully loaded for six months cruising. (mostly beer, it's expensive in the Bahamas). Rick I http://groups.yahoo.com/group/beneteau393/ beneteau393 : Beneteau393 Group
