I'm planning on sailing south from Toronto next year to the Bahamas, Cuba and Cayman Islands and I'm wondering how important it is to have the boat (O'Day 35) properly registered in Canada. Right now I only have a license for the boat which essentially says I have paid the the taxes on it. The problem I have is that to register the boat I need the builder's certificate which I don't have. I guess sailor's from Canada would best able to answer my question whether I need the boat registered but if anyone knows how I can obtain a builder's certificate for an O'Day I would appreciate it. I'd give Rudy at D&R Marine (508)644-3001 a call, he has most of the info on the O'Days, not sure if he could produce a builders certificate. Esencially, D&R Marine is O'DAY now, Rudy bought up all that he could and does own the "O'DAY" name. He has the molds for the O'Day 35 as well. He is a great guy to deal with as long as you understand that he runs a "one-man shop" with occaisional help from family members. You can contact him by e-mail, but (good or bad?) phone calls are best way. I'm not familiar with Canadian Boating requirements, I do know that in the USA, ALL motorized vessels MUST be registered in ther state of principal use unless documented with the USCG. Most USA State registrations are recognized by foreign countries, although USCG Documentation is said to be even better.
