Thanks to all for your support to my other post. I have a 1984 Catalina 30 that I did a quick haul this past weekend and had the bottom pressure washed. This made a big difference in her performance;however, she stills pulls to port under power. I did balance the boat with additional ballast to the starboard side from my last post but this did not improve the steering. Do I need to check something else or just not worry. Thanks again.

John, On my Catalina 30 and Hunter 27, a pull to port under power is normal. Should be minimal at low power and require more pressure as power increases. I had a very hard pull on the Catalina 30 due to a bent rudder post. You could see the angle of bend by looking at the rudder and the skeg in front of it. They should be parallel. I replaced the rudder (newrudders.com) and it made a big difference. Now pulls to port under power but doesn't pull your arm off.
As long as it doesn't pull to port when sailing downwind, I wouldn't worry.

It's called prop walk. Do a search on that exact phrase on this message board, Google it and read on forever.

What type of prop do you have? That could be the problem. It could also need to have the prop re-pitched.

John,

As always, Stu hit it on the head with prop walk. And this is a good thing. with a clean prop your wheel will try and spin somewhat. Again because of prop rotation, you will feel this.

On the good side, it's a sure sign your prop is clean and boat speed will be improved.

motor on pal...
