I was making a down wind run the other weekend, and could not keep the jib filled and in place. SO I grabbed the adjustable boat pole, stuffed the tip into the bowline and pushed it out to the side with the but against the mast. A little tension from the winch locked it in place. While not the most efficient method, it worked. That being said, I am wondering if I was gaining much benifit? My main was to port with the jib to starboard. Right / Wrong ? Why?

If you have GPS you can check you speed
over the bottom in each configuration. I too used my boat hook in that manner last year, liked the result and made a whisker pole from some bamboo and a pair of turned wooden ends.

I did exactly the same thing with the boat hook, as a test. I liked it so much I bought a whisker pole. An advantage of a proper whisker pole is that when you release the jib sheet, the pole swings around to the forestay (with little force) as the jib sheet runs freely through the whisker pole end fitting. IOW, it releases quickly and safely without going foreward. I haven't bothered to try to measure any speed improvement. Just having the jib fixed in place and QUIET instead of filling and colapsing is a wonderful improvement. ...RickM...

Straight downwind is slow
Wing on wing with the genoa poled out, you will be slow unless the wind is above say 15 kts. You are pushing air out of the way on the front of the sails - all push, no aerodynamic pull. Sailing at a deep angle - say 150 - with the genoa poled out will certainly be faster in terms of speed over the ground. Velocity made good towards a mark will probably also be faster until the wind is +15.

....dosen't have to be done DDW. As you head up and the AWA moves forward, the genoa will actually fly backward and does this very efficiently. Of course you will need to have a line adjustable pole that can push the clew far enough forward. Placing telltales along the leech is very helpful for trimming this way. The leech becomes the leading edge and the telltales work just like you were trimming your genoa in the normal manner.
