You're kidding,,,,,,right? 12 volts? Everything is

12 volts DC, or close to it. But you knew that,,,,Right? Just because you plug it into the wall doesn't mean it's anything but 12 volts DC. And it is you know. Oh sure, add or take away a couple of volts. It's still close enough to 12 volts DC to work on that power supply.(ships power; 12VDC) Just bypass that nasty shore power plug. Magic happens, no need for an inverter either,,

Fred, most dell laptops

run on 20 volts DC from their AC power supplies/chargers. The battery packs are 18 volt packs. Some of the earlier ones run on 16 V packs. You can purchase a DC to DC converter for their laptops. I wouldn't suggest trying to run them off of 12 volts directly into the power jack.

Try this for PC and other gear

A "universal adaptor" for PC and other rechargable gear. As a road warrior, cutting down on number of poower supplies is a real weight saver. This device has diferent tips for charging different devices all from the same supply and differt cords fro differnt power sources. And you can simultaneaously charge PC and cell phone (or iPOD etc etc). Can't vouch for suitability in a marine environment though. Sold at Radioshack too

Reudi, so do Sony's like mine. The point I was

trying to make (and failed) was that nearly all consumer electronics run off of low voltage DC. (oh hell, ALL electronics must have low voltage DC or they can't work) My nav station Sony computer AC power supply is 19.5 volts DC output. The computer will run off of 12 volts right from my control panel but the screen flickers. The computer draws one amp at this voltage. I found a transformer online that plugs into cigarette lighters. It has variable output. I cut off the plug and wired it directly to the boat. Then I set the transformer to 19.5 volts. No more flicker. But now the computer draws two amps. That's still a lot better that going through an inverter, then to the 'brick' and then back to DC. Wiring direct to ships power works for conventional 'at the desk' PCs too. Had one wired that way for 10 years before I went to a lap top after prices fell.
