Hi to all out there. I would like to know if anyone out here has ever painted there own boat. I have a 33' Cherubini Hunter 1978 in bad need of top side paint and mast paint. Looking for any help I can find. I was told by someone in my yard that I could paint both the top side and mast with a brush. This does not sound right to me. I do not have the $$ for a new yard job. They quoted me $8,500.00. Thanks for your help. Mac McComish s/v The Rose

Interlux Brightsides One Part

Our first boat was a 1972 22' Southcoast "Red Dog" and I painted the hull using Interlux Brightsides Single Part Polyurethane in Bright Red. If you are careful with the right surface prep, the type of roller and the correct use of (Interlux 333)brushing liquid, I think you will do fine. I would weigh the cost of a professional job against the value of the boat. The finish may not be glass smooth, but it will be very close and you will save enough $ to buy lots of boating toys to make up for it.

Interlux also.

I used Interlux Toplac after a first attempt with Brightside. Search www.sailnet.com for Casey's article on painting the boat. But I was only doing the cabin trunk, the hull is a much bigger project. The expanse of white is so large that flaws are much more noticeable. Toplac went on so much easier using the roll and tip method. You have to look very closely to see any brush marks. You should consider getting a friend to help and using a two-part Intelux. You cannot do it alone because it sets too fast. The results with two-part will look about the same but the longevity will be much greater.

brush or roller

Brush or roller depends very much on your skills and the material used. I worked on a yard and they - the painters - did most the work with a brush although I could not believe it first. I did a full restauration on a 27 foot sailer including the hull with Double Coat, which can be used on polyester and epoxy. Used a roller which comes in combination with this stuff The roller burns away after about 2 sq meters of "paintïng" The tric is a very good sanding with number 300 or more until you have a perfect underground Then very important is to get it grease free. Which needs to be done before the work with the emery paper begins. So not even a hand should touch the surface anymore... International and others have excelent papers describing the works but it will take you perhaps 3 months of work with perhaps 5 days of painting.. and waiting. Good luck, Peter
