Please excuse that this post is not entirely about my sailboat!

My house is on a steep hill, and to paint the outside woodwork involves putting up scaffolding at a cost of ~$18K even before the painting cost!

I had this done about 7 yrs ago, but now the woodwork needs repainting. I REALLY don't want to spend ~$18K every few years.

It seems the life span of normal house paint is 3 to 5 years. But I believe the life of paints intended for boats is much longer. This means epoxy, perhaps two-part paints (I'm not an expert - never used them).

What do you think about using boat paint for house woodwork (window frames, etc) that are exposed to bright sunlight for most of the day? What boat paint should I use?

Would welcome comments and advice.

Never use a sledgehammer to drive in a pin.

Regardless of the astronomical cost of using good 2-part epoxy, it will not withstand the expansion and contraction of wood which is far in excess of FRP.

There are spray epoxies we use here which stand up reasonably well to the Florida UV and temp swings but still require reprinting every 5-10 years.

Ever consider siding?

Don,

your comment about expansion/contraction is well taken.

Can you give me a link to the spray epoxies you mention. I've never seen anything like that in CA.

I painted the trim on our house with Lowe's semi-gloss exterior paint 12 years ago and it still looks like new. Trim is cedar. Soffit is exterior plywood. Not sure why it holds up better than flat paint. Maybe I just got lucky.

A couple of things at play here. Boat paint, besides being expensive, would fail quicker than your house paint. If you want a paint to last you need a proper primer and quality topcoat. My suggestion is to use one of the new technology filling primers like XIM Peel Bond. It acrylic and breathes while tenaciously adhering to the wood surface. Topcoat with SW Durations and you have a system that will look good for 10 years. The key is the primer. Old technology latex and oil/alkyd primers can fail in 3-5 years which causes the top coat to fail.

Oh, go ahead and paint the entire house with copper-laden bottom paint. Turn the house into a Faraday cage and you won't have to wear aluminim foil on your head to block out the NSA drones.

Rhino Shield is an elastomeric. Might want to be careful since elastomeric has about a 0 perm rating which means it doesn't breathe. Could be a problem if you have any moisture intrusion also if you have problems with moisture trying to escape which is typical of older poorly insulated houses. Problem shows up in about 10 years with rotting in the stud walls. Hey what has this to do with sailing? Sorry if I have ventured into house paint trivia.

Find a James T. Davis store and to talk to the product manager.

Get the best paint you can for the job and keep the receipt. The better paints have warranties. Make sure you don't do anything to void the warranty.

When I built a house to replace the one that burned, I went with low maint stuff.. I knew that most of the problem with house paint looking terrible after a few years is the expansion and contraction of the wood, having sanded the entire outside of the board/batten of the previous house .. I used a lot of Hardie Plank and I am slowly retrofitting trim with the PVC foam stuff.. I am at 10 years now and the only paint that needs re-doing is the stuff on wood parts.. I wonder if they make Hardie board that looks like teak?

I second the Hardie Plank idea for the house, not so sure about the boat though. My house was built with Hardie Plank siding and trim boards and it is all but maintenance free. I believe the material is available prepainted as well. Now all that is needed is a window manufacturer that can provide a product with the same level of durability.

Though I have not lived ashore since 1969, I believe it would be more about preparation than the paint, to some degree.
Most house painters I have noticed only scrape off the loose paint and recoat. Perhaps if you could get back to all wood and begin with a good primer/sealer under the undercoat, as we do on boats, building your coats using multiple layers of thin paint, then it would last longer. But on boats we sand between coats, pretty labor intensive for a house. The easy to use latex paints may not have the longevity of oil based paints (if they are even legal on a house?) commonly used on wooden boats and the epoxy 2 part paints might be prohibitively expensive.
Not at all sure it's helpful to you, but it is my 2 cents worth.

Capta- ACRYLIC Latex enamels are very different paints than the old latexes.

My ex did a sign for a business using acrylic latex enamels, that was exposed to the sun daily for 15 years and still looked pristine at the end. Don't know how long it would have held up- somebody stole it- probably now a skate board ramp.

If I were painting a house, that would be my choice.

Seriously, you can't use a ladder or a window-washer's rig?

I don't buy that 18k in scaffolding setup is the only way to skin this cat.

Before I'd build 18 large worth of scaffolding, I would hand off of a rope tied to the chimney.

And if I had to paint anything afterwards, I'd loop it around my neck..

A boom lift would allow two people to paint the soffits at the same rate as if they were standing flat feet on the ground. With a push of a couple of buttons they could move between windows on all of the floors and across to entire width of the house.

I can't Speak for Using Bottom Paint on the Exterior but...

I can tell you that bottom paint on the trailer or on a concrete driveway lasts at least four times longer than does the same paint on the boat.

Wonder if the stuff for concrete will last longer on the boat than on the concrete?
