This might seem like a stupid question, but I am preparing to order graphics for my boat. I want to include a home port designation. There lies the question. The general vicinity of the port is called "Point Breeze, NY". The specific waterway is called "Oak Orchard, NY". My yacht club (Oak Orchard Yacht Club) is in a very small town called "Waterport, NY" but I actually live about 50 miles away near "Niagara Falls, NY". Which is the proper name to use? I have seen them all listed on various boats. Most maps of Lake Ontario will identify the port as Point Breeze. I'm leaning toward that thinking Point Breeze is the more recognisable name, but of course, its not as recognisable as Niagara Falls. But Niagara Falls is really on the Niagara River, where sailboats dare not tread.

This is a no brainer

The home port is where you keep the boat. Use that name. It doesn't have to be a popular name. It's up to you.

Not required

If I remember correctly from my research, hailing port is not required on your boat UNLESS it is registered with the Coast Guard. Therefore, if your boat is registered with the state DMV don't loose too much sleep wondering which name home port to use.

to clarify...

if boat is documented with the USCG, the hailing port HAS to be the city listed with USCG. Wrong name can result in stiff penalty if they stop you.

Your Choice

The closest water to me is Newburyport, MA (which is where I take my H28 for the winter). I live in Hampstead, NH. I keep my boat in Boothbay, ME all summer. When I bought the boat a couple of years ago, I decided to re-document the boat using the same name but changed the hailing port to Boothbay, ME. I would chose the one you like best. However, once you choose, you will probably want to stick with it forever (even if you move to Florida) since it's a pain to change it.

I puuchased a used boat. How can I tell if the PO registered with the Coast Gaurd? And, does it matter?

was my favorite "homeport" Unless you are cruising, not sure that it really matters where you put as your hailing port. just my opinion tho'

Just for fun

I'd love to see her on Lake Alice. Go with Point Breeze.
