"Short Hop"

My wife is an avid softball player so the name was partially derived from the baseball/softball term and it is in a "sports jersey" type script.

It has multiple meanings as we had intended to cruise extensively when we bought her so we figured we'd always be on a "short hop" from one port to the next.

Catalina 30, PO named her "Break Wind" we changed it to "Adagio" only to find about a thousand other boats also named the same thing. Adagio is a musical term meaning "a slow graceful passage".
Hunter 35.7, PO named her Tritium. Tritium is the isotope of hydrogen that has an extra neutron. It is used a lot in nuclear bomb making. He worked for the NSA so I'm not sure what that was all about cause those guys are communicators not nuclear scientists.
Hunter 40.5, PO named her Bardi Sea after his aunt (Bardi C. xxxxx) who raised him.

Any name is as valid as any other. To each...well...you know.... Anyway, the P.O. had named my boat "Clewless". For the first month I left it as that,(other things to do). As I was leaving the harbor one day a old salt yelled at me from his vintage boat, saying, and I quote, "I've seen you out there, and you are not clueless". Now I've been told that tradition is that you keep something on the boat representing it's old name. So, at that moment I knew what her new name would be....."Knot Clewless". As asinine as it may be or sound, it has a story, it was inspired by compliment from a veteran, and it now means more to me than a trip through the dictionary or some such. Happy winds to all, "breaking" or not. LOL Joel H.

we were looking for a unique, un-documented name for our first liveaboard size sailboat. Every name I could think of, when I looked at the USCG list there were already several. finally, I found one that we liked and that nobody else had ever documented with the USCG. So now we own the SV "Twisted Sheets".

After trying out a series of names I finally settled on AirBorne. Because I was with the 82nd Airborne in the army and because a sailboat is borne by the air.

Ummm...

"Soggy Paws"? :D

It evokes our Clumbers wet feet - sporting breed.

"I have always thought that sailboats’ names should evoke the elemental
beauties of stately motion on the water rather than the Freudian
fantasies, puerile puns, asinine anagrams, or infantile inanities of
their name-givers. " A good friend of mine said during a boat naming discussion

We like to name our boats after birds:
Jackdaw Beneteau First 235
Kestrel Beneteau First 36.7
Blue J Beneteau First 260 (it is her original name and suits us just fine)

How about everybody else?

Interesting, I have never has "breaking wind" compared to a ""a slow graceful passage" :D

Our O'Day 25 is named "Gudenuph" and she answers her purpose in every way. Any more is wasted resource. LOL

"Breaking Wind" also used to be the name of the lounge at the Bermuda Biological Station. I used to have a t-shirt from there, of an angelic cherub complete with wings and a puff of .....cloud behind him.

"Just Chillin", named by as best we can tell, by third owners back. When we first seen her, I didnt like the name as it sounded funky and wanted to change it to "Lottie", or "My Lady".

Lottie and Luke were rescue pups we took in several years ago. Rather than German Short Hair mixes as we were told, we later found their original rescuers down in Mobile AL who said they were pure bred Blue Ticks. Luke was the lazy man of the house, Lottie was a runner. As she aged, and especially after we got down here in the Ozarks, she would take off and be gone for hours. Those excursions became longer and longer, coming back more and more tore up and exhausted, bleeding feet, broken nails, sleep three days, eat voraciously, and take off again. One day she just didnt come back.

A year or so earlier I found this antique scrap book full of old magazine clippings. It was neat and cheap so I bought it. As we paged through it, we came across a print of a painting of a row boat on the water, with a black and white dog riding in it all by himself. The dog looked almost exactly like Luke. The name painted across the stern is Lottie, which blew me away. I dont know why, but I instantly knew she would be gone soon. And I always thought I would someday like to name a boat after her.

Back in the late 70's my brother in law built a small wooden boat. She was an odd little thing, she had a tiny little house at the front, a wide transom, and big bench seats down each side. She looked like a little tug boat and he named her "My Lady", after the Moody Blues song. That too I always liked.

We had all been thinking of names, when one day I brought home a pack of papers and manuals from the boat, and found a log book those owners had made when they owned her. In the book it discussed why they named her that, it was their escape, their weekend cabin. They came out here to "just chill". As we read the book, we knew we could never change her name, and she has become for us what she was for them. But Lottie will always be out there too.

After great thought of what to name our boat, we decided on "Lil Provo". We frequently visit Turks and Caicos and love Providenciales. This is a great island with beautiful Grace Bay and great scuba diving. The island is referred to as Provo. Being we use our boat as a get away, we decided to call her Lil Provo after the nick name of the island. Now when we go sailing we feel like we are back in Provo sailing or diving. Our vessel name reflects a love of a specific island.

Jim A? Is dat you?
