My 1974 Catalina is named "Second Wind", as I turned 50 and the boat was a restoration project. The 5 kids are almost grown up, so the boat, the bride, and I, all caught a second wind.

I saw the Grateful Dead well over 100 times from 1979 until the time Jerry Garcia died in 1995. I have since seen The Dead (the mid-200's incarnation) and Furthur (the current incarnation). I really like the flow of the music, although Jerry being gone does change the jams a bit.

I have named several dogs with titles of GD songs and 1 of my businesses is named using an obscure reference to a line in several GD songs. Given that the boat uses wind power, and my propensity for developing names that incorporate the band, "Easy Wind" from Workingman's Dead was a no-brainer.

I think it works pretty well over the VHF too. My girlfriend is an art director and she chose the font for the graphics.

I think that your son gave the best name possible to your boat, as "olo" in Greek means "all" or "everything". And that's true, there isn't any other feeling like as sailing.
My boat's name is "Casta Diva", from Bellini's opera as she is an italian beauty, a Grand Soleil 343, which I keep in perfect conditions.
Thanks cesare! What a cool coincidence. Actually, My son is really into Greek mythology, not sure if somewhere, somehow he picked up on this, but I'd like to think so.

She was originally christened 'Quintessence' then changed to 'Blue Heron'.
After acquiring her in 'ought 6', I sanded the blue heron off. Her original moniker was ever so faintly visible if I caught just the right angle. Weeks of walking by and puzzling over it and it finally dawned on me.
King Neptune will honor my prayers for safe passage because she is once again Quintessence.

Windsong..... At one time my wifes favorite perfume. Also our first boat had a swing keel that would hum when fully down and attract porpoise that would swum along side. Now we have our third Windsong.

My boat's name is SEDNA. As a woman sailor I originally thought it would be 'cute' and funny to name her Broad's Reach...
Then I thought that wasn't classy enough for my dignified old Cape Dory, hence SEDNA. SEDNA is a mermaid that is part of Inuit mythology. Inuit fishermen pray to her for good fishing and calm seas. I like the meaning of the name and that it is short and easily pronounced.

Oday and Catalina O'Day 25 and Catalina 30 Milwaukee
Both of our boats came already named. The first (our O'Day 222) was Hakuna Matata. Not a bad name especially if you have young kids which we did at the time. The second one (O'Day 25) is named Lagniappe, which I guess is of cajun origin meaning "a little something extra". However, my favorite is a boat I saw up in Port Washington named "Luff Me Tender".

Captain Dighton,

I assume that you are located on the Taunton River. I'm located on a mooring behind this club: http://www.shawometyachtclub.com/ I'll have to keep an eye out for your boat this summer. If you're down our way stop by and we'll give you the grand tour of the club.

I once saw a sailboat named Sea Lingus at the best yacht club in my city. While it is a very appealing name, I'm to squeamish to use it because of what it brings to mind. I just don't have the personality for it. Might be a good one for a hedge fund manager or subprime mortgage salesman to use. Waiting for Godot might work for my boat - it's the story of my life.

"Lady Di" is our Irwin25.............named for the PO's late wife.
"Skelping" is our US27b...............means "beating"(insert sailing snicker here) in Gaelic. or if you've seen the movie High Spirits: having sex with a ghost.
The Najade is named but she hasen't been christened yet so I'm gonna keep it under wraps for now.

Hi Mark!
Don't worry about that "Friend'' thing on this web site. Most of my friends get a hold of me by email anyway. sailtrinkka1986@verizon.net
I was going to ask you if you had a slip or a mooring. Now that I know you have a mooring there at Shaw's, I'm confident that I can talk you into joining the SYC. http://www.shawometyachtclub.com/ Stop down to the club this spring and I'll give you the grand tour of the place.
Don't get me wrong, I think that moorings are great. I'm on mooring #8 in back of the club and I wouldn't trade it for a slip for anything. For me, the advantages of having a mooring are; that I can pick up my mooring under sail, or sail off it without having to use the motor. The chances of someone coming on board my boat out on the mooring are a little less than having it on a slip.
We have plenty of room at the dock to get your boat tied up and pick up gear and guests. There's a 20 minute tie up time if the club is busy. Most days, nobody is at the club using their boat, and a person can tie up for as long as he or she wants. I've been there on weekends when there wasn't too many using their boats. Some just come down and hang out at the picknic tables or shoot pool in the club.
Our club will be renting out slips this year for about five boats. This is something new that they want to try just to see how it works out.
Myself, I don't like slips. They're hard to maneuver with a sailboat especially with winds and strong currents working against you.

It's a great club Mark, and we like to call it North Dighton's best kept secret. It has a decent house with everything including a large ice machine with plenty of free ice for members, a great ramp, and plenty of dock space, plus 29 moorings. I'll look forward to seeing you this year. There's another guy on this forum who lives in Bridgewater and owns an O'Day 20, who is interested in getting into the club also. I look forward to getting together with you guys. We can go over the charts and I'll show you guys my favorite anchorages and fishing spots, both out in the bays and on the river.
Till then,--Think Spring!

Hunter H260 Gull Lake
Two years ago I decided to start sailing. I purchased a MacX and really did not like the name. My friends have called me Shanker as a nick name for many years (long story) so I decided to change the Mac's name to SHANKERS AWEIGH. Looked into what the proper renaming ceremony consists of and when I was a month from performing the ceremony, last spring, I sold the boat!! I purchase a Hunter 260 that was a perfect fit for me. It is called BLUE HONU, which is blue turtle in Hawiian. Since I was young I have loved turtles. Each year I would catch some for pets. One year we caught a very large Snapper and Dad put an eye bolt in its shell, put a rope through it and let it patroll the back yard on its leash :) When I saw the Blue Honu for the first time I knew it was destiny and it was going to be mine (and blue is my favorite color).

Love this thread!!

My daughter picked the name of our first "named" boat, "Highwind" from a computer game she played. The next boat I acquired I named "Tailwind" reflecting its better offwind performance. Names like "Breakwind" were tossed around by friends, but only as a laugh. Boatus magazine had an article with some of these more descriptive names, recently.
