Boat name

I'm looking at getting my boat's name put on soon. It's "Even Keeled" I have a design I came up with with the name. Looks like a cross section of a sailboat made up with the letters. The first leg of the K extends down for the keel. I'm trying to decide if I should go with that on the stern, or on both sides or use just letters on both sides. What have others done? One thing keeping me from putting it on the stern is I'll be using a temp ladder at times and may install a permanent ladder someday.

I'd put it on both sides near the stern. They won't see it on the transom.

Port and starboard stern quarters is pretty standard unless documented. Then I would use the stern for the hailing port (and name if you want to be exactly correct.)

I've had my lettering for over a year and was waiting for the haul out to apply, never happened. I went with stern but with the proposed swim ladder port and starboard aft would have been a better choice.

BTW ... Even Keeled, I like it.

I would put the name on the Port and Starboard sides near the stern. It's more visible than putting the name on the stern.

Years ago I saw a name on a sailboat that read, "Foot loose and fancy free" Of course, the more characters in a name, the more expensive it is to put on your boat. When I first bought my boat I was going to name her "Adventure Galley" and decided to go with a short name.

I had read about a guy named John Guzzwell who built a 20' sailboat and named it "Trekka" because he was going on a trek with this boat around the world and he added a female flair to the name.
My boat has always been like a play thing or a trinket to me. Hence the name "Trinkka."

I much prefer port and starboard, there are more chances to see it. On the stern it is missed so often. Even if you can't actually read the words, the formation becomes familiar at a distance and your friends will know it's you more easily. We can look out quite a distance and see our friends sailing by....based on the shape of their name and of course their sail set up etc. Name on the back is useless at a distance.

Big advantage to application of name on side as noted by most... What about your Port, Club, or Dock location? Side or always on stearn?
"Happy Dolphin" to get decals applied to sides next week. ;o)
PS: The Happy Dolphin Inn (Saint Pete Beach, FL) was our honeymoon destination - circa 1972... I know, I'm such a romantic...

I christened the boat last night with a bottle made for the occasion. It was supposed to shatter easily. What a joke! The bottle was nearly bulletproof! Tried several times on the rudder bracket and then several more on the bow eye. It finally broke but that I would have been better off with a regular bottle I bet. As for the name I've planned on doing both sides.

Trying to figure out the font now. I'm thinking some sort of script lettering, but nothing too flowery. Here are some samples from the lettering guy

I was thinking something along the lines of Chris Craft script but want it to be readable, of course.

I have a font that might be of interest that I purchased along with some others... just to look at (called FG Saga) Even keeled
but I like what you have on your sample! Take a picture of your boat and superimpose the picture on it and you can get a good idea of what looks best and the scale you want to use before doing it. The boat is just gorgeous.

I like those 2 as well. I like the "E" that looks like a backwards "3" Your font didn't show up in my browser but I looked it up. That's pretty cool, too. I like 4 and 5, too. Decisions decisions!

I notice that once we are familiar with a boat, it doesn't really matter whether we can read the lettering that well. The picture is an example of that for me...I can't really read it that well but if I saw your boat on the water a few times, I would know it was you from a distance away. Friends have their boat name in an arch of sorts and a long way away I can see it's them because of that.

Yep, agree, like that backward 3 looking font!!
Ours is similar to the 5th one down and to tell you the truth, I am kinda sick of it. I wanted something different but the guy who did it wore me down.....and I settled. Don't do that!
