I' ve used Dan Stedly (Big Dog) to move my pearson 31 from new Jersey to Louisiana. Did a great job just as he said. I found him after I got burnt by another Chris Atwood. (thief). Dan number is 843 810 7900.

Good Luck

I noticed in all this chat there is no mention of cost/charges for actually sailing,(not freighting), the boat. Out of naive curiosity, about how much is it to have someone move a boat around this size? Is it based solely on time?...distance?...??

Pardon my ignorance, I have never had to 'move' a boat that I wasn't sailing myself.

The true cost depends on a lot of factors. If you sail it yourself, you've first got the cost of transportation to get yourself down to the boat, then it depends on how many marinas you stay in, and whether or not you have to pay your crew, etc. If you're self-employed, how much income will you lose by taking time off to sail it yourself?

If you pay someone to sail it for you, you've some of the above expenses plus probably around $200 a day for the Captain, plus his transporattion expenses to and from the boat. The surveyor we used also delivers boats, and that's roughly his price range.

We purchased our latest boat in Jacksonville, and sailed her ourselves from there to Miami, then to Key West and then up to St. Pete, where we had her pulled out and shipped. It was actually farther by land shipping her from St Pete, but if we had just done the smart thing cost-wize and shipped from Jacksonville, we would have missed a truly great experience.

Our original plan was to sail her up to Pensacola and pull her out there, but after enduring the recent record breaking cold in Key West, none of us were looking forward to a sail across the northern gulf - at least not this winter! Our FL cruising permit expired Feb 15, so she had to be out of state by then or we'd have had a ton of sales tax to pay. Total shipping was around $3200.

I used these guys

I moved my 27 Catalina from Norfolk, Va to Jacksonville, Fl using A1 Haul-A-Boats. http://www.a1haulaboat.com/ with outstanding results. The price, of course was reflectve of current gas prices, etc, but it wasn't unreasonable. $1,500.00. The guy that came to get my boat was an actual Captain that retired from over the water deliveries and switched to land based deliveries. I did have to pay for unstepping and prepping the mast for transport (i.e. wrapping in plastic) and for the haul out. Of course you have to reverse the process at the distand end. Over all I think I was out less than 2500.00 all told. This was in 2007. I reccomended them to a friend of mine who had a 42' hauled from Tn to Va and his cost all told was about 5000. This was less than a year ago. I would use these folks again. Great customer service and an insured hauler.

Had my Hunter 37 moved from St Marys, GA (JAX, FL area) to Myrtle Beach, S.C. July 2009. 340 miles. Paid $1,200.00. About $2.00 a mile R/T. Other bids came in as high as $1,800.00 on Uship. American Boat transport did it. He was deadheading from Maryland to Florida and stopped in Ga to pick up my boat , dropped it in MYR and returned to Fl.

Count on around $1000 to downrig, load, then with permits and the high cost of fuel and time $2000 and another $1000 at the end. Make sure the crane and the hauler give you an insurance certificate just in case there is a problem then you are covered.
$4000 to $6000 most likely.

Most deliveries will be around 200 to 250 dollars per day for a captain and 150ish for a mate if needed. Additionaly all expenses (including a food allowance) and transportation ( to and from the start and depart location and return trip home) related fees are to be paid by the owner. All repairs are the owners responsibility. Some may give you a package cost or flat fee. There is no real formula to go by.

Has anyone heard of a boat mover by the name "Boats Express"? Thanks, sailgirl
Ive heard of him. He has many aliases on U-ship.com. Take a look at www.thomasduncantrucking.com. He moved my boat from Galveston,Tx to SF,Ca. It went flawlessly and he was a joy to do business with. He came highly recommended to me and I would call him again in a heart beat. THEY DONT MAKE EM LIKE THAT ANYORE.. Tell him I said hello.

The search gave the following link, check it out: http://www.ripoffreport.com/Truckin...a-Sp/boats-express-aka-specialty-sh-j3467.htm The report was not a happy one from an owner (I have no personal experience with them). I called Eddie English from Boat Trailer in Milton who had helped me find a mover before and he recommends Doyle Ellis 850-449-1590. Eddie is top notch and he holds the mover in high regard. Best luck. D

I agree with the on-the-water move. I've crewed on 3 yacht deliveries varying between 1400 nm to 200 nm and loved it. If you need help let know.

I want to thank everyone for their help and suggests about moving my boat. "Boats Express" is finally going to P/U the boat Monday in Pensacola and I would think they could deliver it sometime Tuesday(only 366 miles). I guess I have let this moving business get to me. But this boat is MY BABY!!! I've really caused alittle excitement with friends and family about the boat coming home. I've got people that want to be here when it's delivered and someone told me they may call the local TV station!!! I told them its just a 33' sailboat not the QE2.

Well, an update to my update. The company "Boats Express" are just a bunch of guys sitting in an office playing broker. But the best thing came out of all of this, they got Smith's Boat Salvage to move the boat!!! Bo Smith is the nicest guy you could ever met. Offered advise and talked to me like I was a person, not like "Boats Express"(they kept calling me "Honey"), wrong thing to say when a woman trying to do business. Now I know who I will call to put the boat in the water. And he also does salvage work, now I can see about getting some parts. Give Bo Smith a call (601) 201-9135. You can't go wrong if Bo is doing the haul. Sailgirl

Sounds like Boats Express is a bunch of hacks... and that Bo is a good egg. Good to hear how it turned out.

Sailgirl,

After running into several overpriced brokers with whom I did not get a good feeling I decided to check out this site and came across your referal for Bo. He offered a fair price to move my boat from Virginia to Atlanta, showed up on time, and did everything he said he would do. Most of his success I would attribuite to the fact that his wife is a pleasure to deal with and makes most of the arrangements:) I got the pleasure of meeting her as well, she accampoined him on my delivery. I highly recommend them to anyone needing to move a boat. They have a first class set up.
